1) Which Crouse-Hinds TP switch box do I order for NM (Romex) cable versus MC or armored cable?
Three cable-entry versions of the Crouse-Hinds 1-1/2 inch steel switch box are sold. TP100 has clamps in each end for non-metallic cable. TP106 has clamps in each end for armored and metal-clad (MCI) cable. TP114 has no clamps at all and is the flush-device conduit version, meant to be fed by a connector at a knockout. Ordering the NM box for an MC feed leaves you with the wrong clamp geometry, so pick the version by what is landing in the box, not by the box size.
2) Can I gang two of these Crouse-Hinds steel switch boxes together for a two-gang switch?
No. The TP series 1-1/2 inch steel switch box is non-gangable, so the sides do not come off and two boxes cannot be joined into a two-gang opening. It is a single-device box only. For a two-gang switch bank you need a gangable box with removable sides, or a one-piece multi-gang box.
3) Is 7.5 cubic inches enough box fill for a single switch on 14/2 or 12/2?
7.5 cubic inches is a shallow-box volume and it fills fast. Under NEC box fill counting, a single switch counts as two conductor volumes, and each 14 AWG conductor counts 2.00 cubic inches while each 12 AWG counts 2.25. That means one switch plus a single 14 AWG cable in and out with a ground is already at the limit, and the same wiring in 12 AWG will not fit. Use this box where the wiring is minimal, a switch leg or a single-cable device drop. If you are landing two or more cables plus a device, go to a deeper box.
4) Can I use this Crouse-Hinds TP steel box in a hazardous or classified area?
No. The TP series steel switch box is rated for ordinary, non-hazardous locations only. Classified areas, whether Class I, II, or III, need an explosionproof or dust-ignitionproof enclosure with the appropriate listing. Do not substitute this box into a classified space because the brand also builds hazardous location product.
5) Will a 1-1/2 inch deep switch box fit in a shallow wall or over a furring strip?
Depth is 1-1/2 inches, which is what makes this box useful where a standard 2-1/2 or 3 inch deep box will not go: furred-out masonry walls, thin partitions, and locations with pipe or blocking behind the stud. The box measures 3 in height and 2 in for the length/depth dimension alongside the 1-1/2 in depth, so it drops into a standard single-gang device cutout.
6) What do the mounting ears on this Crouse-Hinds switch box attach to?
The ears are for fastening the box to a framing member or an electrical support, so the box is screwed to the side of a stud or to blocking and set to the finished wall plane.
