1) Which Crouse-Hinds TP switch box do I order for NM (Romex) cable versus MC or conduit?
The cable type decides the model. TP116 comes with clamps in each end for non-metallic cable. TP120 has clamps in each end for armored and metal-clad (MCI) cable. TP126 has no clamps and is the conduit version with a flush device configuration, and TP130 is the same conduit box with two-screw ears. Pick the clamped version only if you are pulling cable into the box; with conduit the connector does the clamping and the clamps just eat up fill space.
2) How many conductors can I put in a 10 cubic inch steel switch box?
Capacity on the Crouse-Hinds 2 inch gangable switch box is 10 cubic inches. Under NEC box fill rules that is five 14 AWG conductors or four 12 AWG at 2.00 and 2.25 cubic inches each before you subtract anything, and you still have to deduct a volume for the device yoke, for the grounding conductors as a group, and for internal cable clamps if you take the TP116 or TP120. On a single switch with 12 AWG that 10 cubic inches gets tight fast, so gang a second box or step to a deeper one if you are landing more than one cable.
3) Is this Crouse-Hinds box rated for hazardous locations?
No. It is classified for ordinary, non-hazardous locations only. For a Class I or Class II area you need a cast hazardous-location enclosure, not a gangable steel switch box.
4) What size are the knockouts on the Crouse-Hinds TP gangable switch box?
All knockouts are 1/2 inch trade size: one on the bottom, one on the end, and two on the sides. That matches 1/2 inch EMT or rigid connectors and standard 1/2 inch cable connectors, so no reducers or step bits needed for a normal branch circuit run. There are also two cable knockouts.
5) Will a 2 inch deep switch box fit in a 2x4 stud wall?
It will. Depth is 2 inches, which clears a nominal 2x4 stud at 3-1/2 inches actual with room behind. The ears are what set the box face relative to the finished drywall when you nail or screw it to the stud edge, so set your ear position for the wall covering thickness you are running.
6) Does this switch box meet code for commercial work?
The box is built to NEC/CEC standards, so it is acceptable for code-compliant work in the United States and Canada in ordinary, non-hazardous locations. Steel construction also means it can serve as part of the equipment grounding path when fed with metallic raceway or armored cable, which is the usual reason a spec calls for steel rather than plastic.
7) I need more room than a 10 cubic inch switch box gives me. What should I use instead?
When box fill runs out, step up to a 4 inch square box with a device ring instead of ganging switch boxes. The RACO 232MS is a 4 inch square welded box, 2-1/8 inches deep, rated 600V, and it gives far more usable volume for splices feeding multiple devices. The tradeoff is that a welded square box is not gangable the way the Crouse-Hinds TP boxes are, so plan the device ring for the number of devices up front.
8) I am running MC cable - which Crouse-Hinds switch box version do I order, and is a square box a better choice?
For armored and metal-clad cable, order the TP120, which comes with clamps in each end sized for MC. Non-metallic cable takes the TP116 with NM clamps, and conduit runs take the TP126 or TP130, which ship without clamps. All four are the same 10 cubic inch steel box with (2) 1/2 in side knockouts, (1) 1/2 in bottom and (1) 1/2 in end knockout. A 4 in square box such as the RACO 232MS is the alternative when you want more wiring room at 2-1/8 in deep with a 600V rating, with cable secured by a separate connector at the knockout rather than by an integral clamp.
