1) Does the Crouse-Hinds TP224 switch box have internal cable clamps for NM (Romex) wiring?
No clamps. The TP224 is built for conduit runs, listed as Conduit (no clamps), so the wire enters through the 1/2 inch knockouts with a connector. If you are pulling NM cable you either need a box with built-in clamps or an approved NM cable connector in the knockout.
2) How many wires or devices will a 12.5 cubic inch switch box hold?
The box gives you 12.5 cubic inches of volume. Under NEC box fill, a single device (switch or receptacle) counts as two conductor volumes of the largest conductor in the box, so at 2.00 cubic inches per 14 AWG conductor you have room for six 14 AWG volume allowances total, and at 2.25 for 12 AWG you have five. In practice that is a one-gang switch fed by one 14 AWG circuit with its ground. Tight for a 12 AWG switch loop with a device plus travelers, which is where you gang a second box.
3) Can I gang two or three of these Crouse-Hinds steel switch boxes together for a multi-gang plate?
Yes, it is a gangable box: the sides come off so you can join boxes side by side and build a two, three, or four gang assembly, with each box adding another 12.5 cubic inches of fill. That is the usual way to handle a multi-switch location instead of ordering a one-piece multi-gang box.
4) What size knockouts does this box have and where are they?
Two openings: (1) 1/2 in on the bottom and (1) 1/2 in on the end. Both take standard 1/2 inch EMT or rigid conduit connectors. With only one bottom and one end knockout, a straight-through run works, but if you need to feed and leave from the same face plan for ganging an additional box.
5) Can I use this Crouse-Hinds switch box in a hazardous or classified area?
No. It is rated for Ordinary/Non-Hazardous Locations only. For a Class I or Class II classified area you need an explosionproof cast box with threaded hubs, not a gangable sheet steel switch box.
6) What is the Hold-Tite bracket for, and how does this box mount to a stud?
The Hold-Tite bracket is the nailing/mounting bracket that sets the box against the face of a wood stud at the correct depth for drywall, so you are not shimming to get the device flush. The box also has ears, which lets you screw it to an existing surface or set the device straight to the box in a remodel situation.
7) Is this box suitable for an outdoor or wet location?
No, it is an indoor box for ordinary, non-hazardous locations, and the knockout openings are not weatherproof. For an exterior or damp location use a cast weatherproof box with threaded hubs, such as the Thomas and Betts Red-Dot 2IH3-2 two-gang RT box with three 3/4 inch hubs.
8) My wall is steel stud, not wood. Is this the right box?
The Hold-Tite bracket on this steel box is a face-mount bracket intended for stud framing, but for a metal stud wall many installers prefer a box made for that condition, such as the Cantex EZ20SB EZ Box one-gang non-metallic steel stud box. Note the Cantex is non-metallic, so you lose the metal raceway bonding path this steel box gives you on a conduit system.
9) Will this box satisfy an inspector on a commercial conduit job?
It is built to NEC/CEC standards for ordinary location work, and being steel it carries the equipment grounding path through the conduit system when the connectors are made up tight. For MRO or facility standardization, the single part number TP224 covers one-gang and, by ganging, multi-gang device locations, so you can stock one box instead of several.
