1) Will a Crouse-Hinds TP404 4 inch square box work for a standard duplex receptacle or switch in a 2x4 stud wall?
Yes. The Crouse-Hinds 4 inch steel square outlet box is 1-1/2 inches deep, which is the shallow depth that fits inside a nominal 2x4 stud wall (3-1/2 inches actual) with room to spare on both sides. At 22 cubic inches of volume it handles a normal device box fill for a receptacle or switch with several conductors landing in it. You will need a separate raised device cover to bring the device out to the finished wall surface, since a square box does not take a device directly.
2) How many wires can I legally put in a 22 cubic inch 4 inch square box?
The box gives you 22 cubic inches of usable volume. Under NEC box fill, a 14 AWG conductor counts 2.00 cubic inches and a 12 AWG counts 2.25, so 22 cubic inches works out to eleven 14 AWG or nine 12 AWG conductor allowances. Remember that all grounds together count as one conductor, a device (receptacle or switch) counts as two at the largest conductor size connected to it, and any internal clamps count as one. The box is built to NEC/CEC standards.
3) Can I use these Crouse-Hinds square boxes with NM cable (Romex), or are they conduit only?
These are conduit boxes with no cable clamps. There is nothing inside to secure NM cable, so if you run Romex into one you have to add an approved cable connector at the knockout to secure the sheath. For conduit, EMT or rigid connectors land directly in the knockouts and the connector itself is the securement. On new commercial work in pipe, this is exactly what you want.
4) Which Crouse-Hinds 4 inch square box do I order if I need a bracket to nail to a stud?
Three of the seven come with a bracket already on them. The TP404MSB carries the MSB bracket, the TP418 has the "F" flush bracket for setting the box flush to the face of the framing, and the TP423 has the VMS bracket. The TP404, TP410, TP412 and TP414 come with no bracket, so those are the ones to order when you are mounting to conduit, to a box hanger, or to a surface. Bracket choice is part of the part number here, not a separate accessory.
5) What else do I need to order with a Crouse-Hinds 4 inch square box to finish the install?
The box ships as a box. Plan on a cover: a flat blank cover if it is a junction box, or a raised device ring (mud ring) sized to your wall finish depth if a receptacle or switch is going in it. You also need a conduit connector or fitting at each knockout, since these are conduit boxes with no clamps, plus a 10-32 green ground screw if you are bonding to the ground bump on the TP404, TP414, TP418 or TP423. On the TP410 and TP412 the tapped hole takes the screw directly.
6) Does the Crouse-Hinds TP414 have a place to land a ground screw?
Yes. The TP414 is a drawn box with a ground bump, which is the raised, pre-formed boss you thread a 10-32 green ground screw into for bonding the box and the device pigtail. TP404, TP404MSB, TP418 and TP423 have the ground bump as well. If you would rather have a factory-tapped hole instead of a bump, order the TP410 or TP412, both of which are drawn with a tapped hole.
7) Will a 4 inch square box like the TP410 hold a two-gang device?
Yes, with the right cover. A 4 inch square box takes either a single-gang or two-gang mud ring, so one box can serve two switches or a switch and a receptacle side by side. What limits you is fill, not the opening: at 22 cubic inches, a two-gang setup burns 4 conductor allowances on the devices alone before you count the circuit conductors and the ground. If the count runs tight, step up to a deeper box rather than a second cover.
8) Is a steel square box like this okay for an outdoor or damp location?
Not on its own. These are plain steel boxes for ordinary indoor, non-hazardous locations, with open knockouts and no gasketing. Wet or damp locations call for a listed weatherproof box and cover, typically a cast or die-cast FS/FD style body with threaded hubs and a gasketed while-in-use cover. Use the TP4 series steel squares inside walls, ceilings and dry mechanical spaces.
