The ring adds 42 cubic inches of volume on top of whatever your existing box holds. That is real usable fill under NEC box-fill rules, so it is the fix when a device box is crowded with conductors, devices and grounds. 3) How far will this extension ring stick out past the box?

There are no back or bottom knockouts on it, since the open back seats against the existing box.
5) Can I use this extension ring in a Class I or Class II hazardous area?
No. This is an ordinary/non-hazardous location product. Classified areas, spray booths, fuel dispensing, grain handling and similar spaces need an enclosure and fittings listed for that specific Class and Division, and this drawn steel ring is not one. Use it in commercial, residential, institutional and general industrial spaces that are not classified.
6) Should I use an extension ring or replace the box with a deeper one?
An extension ring is the retrofit answer.
