Crouse-Hinds EL2 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What hub sizes do the Crouse-Hinds EL series 45-degree female conduit elbows come in?
The EL series runs ten trade sizes, 1/2 inch through 4 inch: EL1 (1/2), EL2 (3/4), EL3 (1), EL4 (1-1/4), EL5 (1-1/2), EL6 (2), EL7 (2-1/2), EL8 (3), EL9 (3-1/2) and EL10 (4). Order by the trade size of the conduit run, not by the outside diameter of the pipe.
2) Can I use a Crouse-Hinds EL elbow in a Class I, Division 1 area?
Yes. The EL series 45-degree elbow carries a Class I, Division 1 NEC hazardous rating and is built for hazardous/classified locations, with NEC/CEC standards construction. That covers areas where flammable gases or vapors are present under normal operating conditions, which is the classification on refinery process areas, paint spray booths and many chemical process rooms.
3) Does this elbow thread onto the conduit, or do I need a coupling?
Both ends are female threaded, so the elbow threads directly onto male-threaded rigid or IMC conduit ends. No coupling needed at either side as long as the conduit is threaded. If you are coming off a piece that already terminates in a female hub or a box hub, you will need a nipple between them.
4) Will this elbow work on IMC, or is it rigid conduit only?
It suits both. The EL is a threaded rigid/IMC series fitting, and since rigid and IMC use the same NPT thread by trade size, the same elbow takes either. It is not for EMT, which is unthreaded and uses compression or setscrew fittings.
5) Should I use a 45-degree elbow or a 90 for routing conduit around an obstruction?
A 45 changes direction in a shallower sweep, so a pair of them offsets a run around an obstruction while eating less bend allowance than two 90s and keeping the pull easier on the wire. Use the 45 where you are jogging a run over or around structural steel or equipment in tight space. Go to a 90 where the run has to turn a full right angle into a box or up a wall. The EL series is the 45-degree angle fitting.
6) Is malleable iron the right body material for a corrosive plant environment?
The EL elbow body is malleable iron, which is the standard rigid/IMC hazardous location fitting material and holds up mechanically in industrial plants, refineries and grain handling. In heavy chemical wash-down or coastal salt exposure, plants commonly specify a PVC-coated or copper-free aluminum fitting instead. If your spec sheet calls out a coated fitting, malleable iron uncoated is not a substitute.
7) How much does a Crouse-Hinds EL conduit elbow weigh for takeoff and support spacing?
Listed product weight is 1.13 lb. For a support-spacing calculation on a long horizontal run, add that per fitting on top of the conduit weight. It is light enough that a single strut clamp either side of the bend handles it on smaller trade sizes.
8) Is this fitting acceptable for a Canadian installation as well as a US one?
Construction meets NEC/CEC standards, so the same EL elbow answers to both the US National Electrical Code and the Canadian Electrical Code. Useful if you are standardizing a fitting list across plants on both sides of the border.
