4) I need to go from 1/2 inch conduit up to 1 inch in a hazardous area. Will one REA adapter do it?
Not with a single fitting. Each REA steps one trade size, so 1/2 inch to 1 inch means stacking an REA12 (1/2 inch to 3/4 inch) into an REA23 (3/4 inch to 1 inch). The male end of the REA23 threads into nothing on the REA12 side, so the practical build is REA12 male into your 1/2 inch hub, then a short 3/4 inch nipple, then the REA23. In a Division 1 area, check that the added joints still leave you the thread engagement the code calls for.
5) Does a threaded REA adapter keep the equipment ground path through the conduit run?
It does. Rigid and IMC conduit is used as an equipment grounding conductor because the metal-to-metal threaded joints carry fault current, and the REA is a threaded metallic fitting in that same path. Nothing about the adapter interrupts continuity as long as the threads are made up tight. That is one reason it is a rigid/IMC fitting rather than a nonmetallic transition.
6) Which way does the REA adapter thread in, and does it matter which end goes to the enclosure?
Orientation is fixed by the part. The small trade size is the male thread and the large size is the female, so the adapter always threads its male end into a smaller hub or coupling and receives the larger conduit into the female end.
