1) What size anti-short bushing do I need for AC/MC cable or flex conduit?
Crouse-Hinds ASB anti-short bushings are sold by trade size, and you match the bushing to the cable or flex you are terminating. Eight sizes cover the range: 5/16 inch (ASB-0), 3/8 inch (ASB-1), 7/16 inch (ASB-2), 1/2 inch (ASB-3), 3/4 inch (ASB-4), 1 inch (ASB-5), 1-1/4 inch (ASB-6) and 1-1/2 inch (ASB-7). On a standard 14/2 or 12/2 MC run you are usually in 3/8 inch territory, which is why ASB-1 moves fastest on a resi or tenant-improvement job. Larger flexible metal conduit runs step up through the 3/4 to 1-1/2 inch sizes. If you are stocking a truck rather than buying for one job, the 3/8 and 1/2 inch sizes cover most of the day-to-day work.
2) Do I still need a connector, or does the anti-short bushing terminate the cable by itself?
You still need the connector. The anti-short bushing protects the conductors from the cut armor, but it does not clamp the cable or secure it to the box. Order the MC/AC or FMC connector in the matching trade size separately, and drop a bushing into each termination as you make it up. Bushings are a consumable on this kind of work, which is why they are bought by the box rather than one at a time.
3) What does an anti-short bushing actually do in an MC cable termination?
When you cut armored cable or flexible metal conduit, the spiral armor leaves a sharp edge at the cut. The anti-short bushing (the red head, as most electricians call it) slips in between the armor and the conductors so that edge cannot bite through the insulation and short a conductor to the metal jacket. Yes. That covers the great majority of modern MC cable, where THHN/THWN-2 conductors are the norm.
5) Will an anti-short bushing work in flexible metal conduit as well as armored cable?
Both. The ASB bushing is made for AC and MC armored cable and for FMC (flexible metal conduit), so the same part covers the two most common flexible wiring methods on a commercial job. Size it to the trade size of whatever you are terminating, not to the wire.
6) Is the anti-short bushing the same thing as an insulated throat connector?
Not the same. An insulated throat connector has the plastic liner moulded into the connector body, so the protection travels with the fitting. The Crouse-Hinds ASB is a separate loose piece you push into the armor before the connector goes on, sized by trade size from 5/16 inch up to 1-1/2 inch. Inspectors in many jurisdictions look for the red head to be visible through the connector window, which a loose bushing gives you and an insulated throat does not.
