Crouse-Hinds LL47 CG – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does an LL conduit body do, and when would I use it instead of an LB or a C?
An LL Condulet is a 90 degree pull and access body with the opening on the left as you face the cover, so the conduit turns sideways along the wall rather than into it. Reach for it when the run has to change direction flat against a surface and you still need a pulling point. An LB turns the run back into the wall or through it, an LR is the mirror of the LL with the opening on the right, and a C body is a straight-through inspection point with no turn at all. The Crouse-Hinds Form 7 LL is body only or in a SnapPack that includes the cover and gasket.
2) What conduit sizes does the Crouse-Hinds Form 7 LL Condulet come in?
Trade sizes run 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2 and 3 inch. Feraloy iron alloy covers the whole range (LL17 through LL87, with LL777 the 2-1/2 inch). Copper-free aluminum stops short of 2-1/2 inch: it is offered in 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2 and 3 inch as the SA suffix. Threads are the standard NPT hubs the conduit body type uses, so the body takes rigid or IMC of the matching trade size.
3) Does the LL17 or LL27 Condulet come with a cover and gasket, or do I have to order those separately?
It depends on the suffix. A plain catalog number like LL17 or LL27 is the body only, so the cover, gasket and cover screws are a separate line. The CG versions (LL17 CG, LL27 CG, and the same through LL67 CG) are SnapPacks that ship as a set. If you are ordering the copper-free aluminum SA bodies, those are listed body only across every size, so plan on covers with them.
4) Can I install a Form 7 LL Condulet in a Class I Division 2 or other hazardous area?
No. The Form 7 LL Condulet is rated for ordinary, non-hazardous locations only. For a classified area you need a body built and marked for that class and division, not this one. Putting an ordinary-location body in a classified space fails inspection regardless of how well it is sealed.
5) Is a NEMA 12 conduit body OK outdoors or in a washdown area?
NEMA 12 covers dust, falling dirt and dripping non-corrosive liquids, which is an indoor rating. It suits plant floors, mechanical rooms, warehouses and back-of-house commercial spaces. It is not a wet-location or hosedown rating, so an exterior wall, a washdown bay, or anywhere the body takes direct spray calls for a body rated for those conditions instead.
6) Should I use the Feraloy or the copper-free aluminum version of the LL Condulet?
Feraloy iron alloy is the heavier, harder-wearing choice for industrial plants and anywhere the body may take a knock, and it is the only material offered in 2-1/2 inch (LL777). Copper-free aluminum, the SA suffix, is lighter and the usual pick where weight on the strut or the structure matters, and where the atmosphere would attack copper-bearing alloys. Both carry the same LL geometry and the same NEMA 12 rating.
7) Will a Crouse-Hinds LL body satisfy an inspector on a commercial job?
The Form 7 LL Condulet is built to NEC/CEC requirements for ordinary locations, which is what an inspector is checking on standard commercial and institutional conduit work. Where it will not pass is a classified area, since the body is rated for non-hazardous locations only.
8) What is the difference between an LL and an LR Condulet, and does it matter which one I order?
It matters, and getting it wrong means the conduit leaves in the wrong direction. Facing the cover of the body, an LL has its back opening on the left and an LR on the right. Both make the same 90 degree turn flat to the mounting surface. Order the LL when the run continues to the left as you look at the cover; there is no way to reverse one in the field.
9) I am standardizing conduit bodies across a facility. Can I keep one LL part number for the whole building?
Only per trade size, since the LL is ordered by size. For a facility that runs mostly 1/2 and 3/4 inch branch conduit, LL17 and LL27 in Feraloy carry the bulk of it, with LL37 for 1 inch feeders. If you want the crew to open one box and have everything, spec the CG SnapPacks so the cover and gasket arrive with the body and nobody is hunting for a cover on the lift.
10) Can I pull wire through a Form 7 LL Condulet, or is it just for turning the conduit?
Both. The whole reason a condulet exists is that the removable cover gives you a hand into the raceway, so an LL body doubles as the pull point on a run that also has to turn 90 degrees. On body-only orders the cover and gasket are separate; the CG SnapPack versions include them.
