1) What trade sizes does the Crouse-Hinds EMT set screw connector come in?
Twelve trade sizes, 1/2 inch through 4 inch: 1/2 (450S), 3/4 (451), 1 (452), 1-1/4 (453), 1-1/2 (454), 2 (455), 2-1/2 (456), 3 (457), 3-1/2 (458) and 4 inch (459). The 3/4 and 1 inch sizes are also offered in a red version, 451RED and 452RED. Order by the trade size of the EMT you are terminating, not by the knockout size.
2) Can I use these set screw connectors on rigid conduit or IMC instead of EMT?
No. These are EMT fittings. A set screw body grips the outside of thin-wall tubing; rigid and IMC are threaded conduit and need threaded couplings or connectors, or a dedicated rigid-to-box fitting. Using an EMT set screw connector on rigid is not a listed connection.
3) Are these EMT connectors rated for wet locations or hazardous areas?
Ordinary, non-hazardous locations only. Set screw fittings are not raintight and are not for Class I or Class II classified areas. For a wet or outdoor run, use a compression (raintight) EMT connector; for classified areas you need threaded rigid conduit and explosionproof fittings.
4) Can I pull THHN through this without a plastic bushing, or do I need an insulated throat?
This is the non-insulated version, so the throat is bare steel. Where the NEC requires a smooth bushing on the conductor entry, either add a bushing or order the insulated-throat version of the fitting instead. The non-insulated body does give you direct metal-to-metal contact for bonding.
5) Why do the larger sizes have two set screws and the small ones only one?
From 1-1/4 inch up (453, 454, 455, 458, 459) the connector uses two tightening screws, because the bigger tube needs more clamping force to hold alignment and keep a solid ground path. The 1/2 and 3/4 inch bodies are single-screw. If a spec sheet calls for dual set screws, stay at 1-1/4 inch or larger.
6) Do these count as an equipment grounding path, or do I still need a bonding jumper?
Steel body, non-insulated, with set screws biting into the tubing gives the metal-to-metal contact the connector relies on for continuity and grounding, and the fittings are built to NEC/CEC requirements. Screws must be tightened down on clean tubing. Where your design or inspector calls for a separate equipment grounding conductor or bonding jumper (service equipment, certain health care branch circuits), the fitting does not replace that.
7) Can I standardize on one fitting type across a whole building's EMT runs?
For dry interior work, yes. The same straight steel set screw connector runs 1/2 inch to 4 inch, so one fitting family covers branch circuits through feeders in commercial, industrial, institutional, retail, education and healthcare spaces. Where a run goes outdoors, below grade, or into a classified area, break out of the standard and spec raintight or threaded fittings for those sections.
8) What is the red color on the 451RED and 452RED connectors for?
Red is identification. The 3/4 inch 451RED and 1 inch 452RED carry a red finish so a particular system, fire alarm or emergency circuit for example, can be picked out on sight during install and later maintenance. Electrically and mechanically they are the same steel set screw connector as the plain 451 and 452.
9) Will the set screws mar the EMT or slip on painted conduit?
The connector uses Plastisol grips, which hold the tubing without chewing it up the way a bare steel point can. On painted or dirty EMT, scrape the contact area clean before tightening, otherwise you lose the metal-to-metal path the non-insulated steel body depends on for continuity.
