1) Is the Crouse-Hinds EL Series elbow approved for Class I Division 1 areas?
Class I, Division 1 is exactly what the EL Series elbow is rated for, which is the classification where flammable gas or vapor can be present during normal operation. It is built for hazardous/classified locations and meets NEC/CEC requirements for those installations, so it can be used in Division 1 and, since a Division 1 rating covers the less severe classification, in Division 2 areas of the same gas group as well.
2) Does the EL Series explosion-proof elbow thread male on one end and female on the other?
Yes, one male end and one female hub. That means it drops straight into a conduit run without a separate coupling, the male end threading into a box, fitting, or coupling and the female hub taking the incoming rigid or IMC. Worth knowing before you cut and thread, because an elbow with two female hubs would need a nipple where this one does not.
3) Can I use the Crouse-Hinds EL elbow on EMT?
No. The EL Series 90 degree elbow is threaded for rigid steel and IMC conduit only. EMT is a thinwall raceway that is not threaded, and it is not permitted in Class I, Division 1 anyway. If your run is EMT, the hazardous area portion has to be converted to threaded rigid or IMC before you can land this elbow.
4) Do I need a sealing fitting if I use an explosion-proof elbow in the conduit run?
The elbow itself is not a seal. An EL Series 90 degree elbow changes direction and keeps the threaded, explosion-containing integrity of the run, but conduit seals are separate fittings placed per NEC Article 501 rules, typically within 18 inches of an enclosure and at the boundary where the conduit leaves the classified area. Order the seals and sealing compound alongside the elbow; they are not included.
5) What makes an explosion-proof elbow different from a standard rigid conduit elbow?
Thread engagement and the rating behind it. A standard rigid elbow just turns the pipe. The EL Series elbow is certified for Class I, Division 1 and is built to contain an internal explosion so the flame and hot gas cool as they pass through the threads instead of igniting the atmosphere outside. In a classified area, an unrated elbow is not a code-compliant substitute no matter how the threads match up.
6) Where would a contractor actually use the Crouse-Hinds EL Series 90 degree elbow?
