2) Can I mount a Crouse-Hinds EYD seal horizontally in a conduit run?
No. The EYD is a vertical-only seal. The drain is what forces that: it relies on gravity to carry condensate out of the fitting, so laying it on its side defeats the drain and the seal. If the run you need to seal is horizontal, you need a horizontal-capable sealing fitting instead, not this one.
3) Is the Crouse-Hinds EYD fitting rated for Class I Division 1 areas?

4) Does the EYD have male or female threads?
Female. Both hubs are female threaded, so the EYD takes the threaded end of your rigid conduit directly on each side. If your run needs a male end at the fitting, for example threading straight into an enclosure hub, this is not the configuration you want.
5) What does the drain on a Crouse-Hinds EYD sealing fitting actually do?
It gives trapped moisture a way out. Conduit in outdoor or process environments breathes and condenses water, and if that water collects at the seal it degrades the sealing compound and can corrode the run from the inside. The EYD's built-in drain lets the condensate escape continuously while the seal still blocks the passage of gases and flame between conduit sections. A plain EY seal without the drain has no such path.
6) Why do I need a sealing fitting on a conduit run in a classified area at all?
Code requires the conduit to be sealed so an ignition inside an explosion-proof enclosure cannot travel down the raceway and set off the surrounding atmosphere, and so hazardous vapors cannot migrate through the conduit into an unclassified space. The EYD is that barrier: it is packed with fiber and sealing compound on site, and it is rated to NEC/CEC requirements for Class I, Division 1. Your electrical drawings will call out where the seals land relative to enclosures and boundaries.
7) Do I get the sealing compound and fiber with the EYD fitting?
The EYD is the fitting body itself. Sealing compound and fiber dam material are consumables bought by the can or kit and packed into the fitting at install, so plan on ordering them alongside the fittings for the job rather than expecting them in the box.
