1) Can a Crouse-Hinds EYS sealing fitting be installed horizontally in a conduit run?
No. The EYS is a vertical-only sealing fitting, so it has to be mounted in a vertical section of conduit for the sealing compound to dam correctly. If your run needs a seal in a horizontal section or in any position, you need a fitting rated for horizontal or universal mounting instead, such as a Crouse-Hinds EYD or EZS style seal. Installing the EYS on its side defeats the seal.
2) Is the EYS seal approved for Class I Division 1 hydrogen areas?
Yes. The EYS carries a Class I, Division 1 NEC hazardous rating and is Group B rated, which is the group covering hydrogen. It is built to NEC/CEC standards, so it satisfies the seal requirements an inspector will look for in a Division 1 gas or vapor area, including hydrogen production and gas processing.
3) Does the EYS sealing fitting come with sealing compound and fiber?
The EYS is the fitting body only. The damming fiber and the sealing cement are ordered separately, so add compound (Crouse-Hinds Chico A) and damming fiber (Chico X) to the order or the seal cannot be poured on site. Plan one pour per fitting.
4) Is the male/female EYS the same as a female/female EYS seal?
No, and this is where the wrong part gets ordered. The EYS16, EYS26 and EYS36 have one male hub and one female hub, which lets the fitting thread straight into an enclosure hub or coupling. The female/female versions of the EYS line take conduit threads on both ends and need a nipple to land on an enclosure. Check which end your enclosure presents before you pick.
5) How much room do I need to fit an EYS seal into a tight conduit run?
Allow about 3.75 inches of vertical length and roughly 1.5 inches across in both directions for the body itself. On top of that you need working access to the filling hub to pour the sealing compound, so do not bury it tight against structure or behind other raceways. The unit weighs 1.08 lb, so no special support beyond normal conduit strapping.
6) Why do I need a sealing fitting at all instead of just running rigid conduit into the enclosure?
In a Class I Division 1 area the conduit itself becomes a path for flame and pressure to travel between enclosures. A seal like the EYS fills the raceway with compound around the conductors so an ignition inside an enclosure cannot propagate down the conduit. The NEC/CEC rules require seals at the boundary of the classified area and within a set distance of explosion-proof enclosures, which is why these show up at every device entry in refineries and chemical plants.
7) Will a Group B rated seal also cover Group C and D areas?
Yes. Group B is the more severe gas group, so a Group B rated Class I Division 1 fitting like the EYS is acceptable in the less severe Group C and Group D atmospheres as well. That makes it a reasonable standardization choice for an MRO stock room covering mixed process areas rather than carrying several group-specific seals.
