1) What conduit trade sizes does the Crouse-Hinds HGLL grounding bushing come in?
The HGLL insulated throat grounding bushing runs the full range from 1/2 inch through 4 inch trade size: 1/2 (HGLL1), 3/4 (HGLL2), 1 (HGLL-3), 1-1/4 (HGLL-4), 1-1/2 (HGLL-5), 2 (HGLL6), 2-1/2 (HGLL-7), 3 (HGLL8), 3-1/2 (HGLL9) and 4 inch (HGLL10). Order by the trade size of the conduit it threads onto, not by the conductor size inside it.
2) Do I need a grounding bushing or will a plain insulated bushing do the job?
Two different parts. A plain insulated bushing only protects conductor insulation at the conduit end. The Crouse-Hinds HGLL adds a lug, so you can land a bonding jumper and carry ground continuity past the fitting. If you are bonding around a concentric or eccentric knockout, or bonding a service raceway, you need the lug version. If the raceway is already bonded by a threaded hub or locknut connection and you only want to protect the wire, the plain insulated bushing is the simpler part.
3) Will the Crouse-Hinds HGLL thread onto EMT, or only rigid conduit?
It threads on, so it lands on the male threads of rigid metal conduit or IMC, or onto a threaded connector or nipple. EMT itself is unthreaded, so on an EMT run you thread the bushing onto the male end of the EMT connector rather than onto the tubing. Match the bushing trade size to the thread you are putting it on, 1/2 through 4 inch.
4) Is the HGLL bushing aluminum or steel, and does it matter where I install it?
The body is malleable iron and the lug is aluminum. The iron body is what takes the wrench and survives handling on the job; the aluminum lug is the part your bonding jumper lands in. Because the lug is aluminum, it will accept aluminum or copper conductors, and on an outdoor or damp install a joint compound on the connection is normal practice for an aluminum lug.
5) Can I use the same grounding bushing across a whole panel or switchgear termination with mixed conduit sizes?
Yes, the HGLL family covers 1/2 inch up to 4 inch, so one part family handles a mixed bank of raceways entering a panel or gear. That is the reason facilities buyers standardize on it: the install method, the lug, and the insulated throat are the same on every size, and only the trade size number changes on the order. Stock by the sizes in your raceway schedule, for example HGLL2 for 3/4 inch home runs and HGLL8 for 3 inch feeders.
6) Does the grounding bushing come with a bonding jumper or grounding wire?
No. The HGLL supplies the lug; the bonding conductor is a separate buy, sized to the overcurrent device protecting the circuit per your design. Plan on ordering the jumper wire and any antioxidant compound alongside the bushings so the terminations can be finished in one trip.
7) I have an HGLL-4 on the drawing, what size conduit is that?
HGLL-4 is the 1-1/4 inch trade size. The Crouse-Hinds numbering does not track inches directly, so it is worth reading off the list: HGLL1 is 1/2 inch, HGLL2 is 3/4 inch, HGLL-3 is 1 inch, HGLL-4 is 1-1/4 inch, HGLL-5 is 1-1/2 inch, HGLL6 is 2 inch, HGLL-7 is 2-1/2 inch, HGLL8 is 3 inch, HGLL9 is 3-1/2 inch, HGLL10 is 4 inch.
8) Will the insulated throat handle the conductors in a fully loaded 4 inch conduit?
That is what the insulated throat is for. It gives a smooth, non-abrading bearing surface at the raceway end so conductor insulation is not cut when a heavy pull is dragged over the edge, and it stays in place afterward. On the large sizes, HGLL8 at 3 inch, HGLL9 at 3-1/2 inch and HGLL10 at 4 inch, that is normally where a big feeder pull would otherwise chew the insulation at the bushing.
