1) What conduit trade sizes does the Crouse-Hinds GLL grounding bushing come in?
The GLL insulated throat grounding bushings run from 3/4 inch up to 5 inch trade size: GLL2 (3/4"), GLL3 (1"), GLL4 (1-1/4"), GLL5 (1-1/2"), GLL6 (2"), GLL7 (2-1/2"), GLL8 (3") and GLL-11 (5"). Match the bushing to the trade size of the rigid or IMC conduit it threads onto, not to the conductor size.
2) Where would an electrician use a GLL grounding bushing instead of a plain insulated bushing?
Use the GLL where the conduit has to be bonded, not just protected: at service equipment, at concentric or eccentric knockouts, on panel and switchgear entries, and anywhere a bonding jumper has to run from the raceway to the ground bus. A plain insulated bushing only protects the conductors and gives you nowhere to land that jumper.
3) What does the insulated throat on a grounding bushing actually do?
The insulated throat is a nonmetallic ring at the conductor opening that keeps wire insulation off the cut edge of the conduit as conductors are pulled and over the life of the installation. On the GLL it is combined with a lug, so the same fitting protects the conductors and gives you a terminal for the bonding jumper.
4) Does the Crouse-Hinds GLL bushing come with the bonding jumper wire?
No. The GLL supplies the bushing body, insulated throat and aluminum lug only. The bonding jumper conductor, the lay-in lug or screw at the enclosure ground bus, and any antioxidant compound are ordered separately.
5) Will the GLL bushing thread onto EMT?
No, not directly. A GLL threads onto the male conduit thread of rigid metal conduit or IMC, or onto the threaded end of a fitting. For EMT you would terminate with a threaded EMT connector first and the bushing goes on the connector's thread, sized to the connector, not the tubing.
