The PLG square head plug runs from 1/2 inch through 4 inch trade size: 1/2 (PLG15), 3/4 (PLG25), 1 (PLG35), 1-1/4 (PLG45), 1-1/2 (PLG55), 2 (PLG65), 2-1/2 (PLG75), 3 (PLG85), 3-1/2 (PLG95) and 4 inch (PLG105). Order by the trade size of the hub or fitting opening you are closing off, not by the conduit you were running.
2) What does the SA suffix mean on a Crouse-Hinds PLG plug?
SA is the copper-free aluminum version instead of steel. Same square head plug, same trade size, different body material. Copper-free aluminum is what you specify where the atmosphere attacks steel or where a facility spec calls out non-ferrous, non-copper-bearing hardware. SA is offered in 3/4 (PLG25 SA), 2 (PLG65 SA), 3 (PLG85 SA), 3-1/2 (PLG95 SA) and 4 inch (PLG105 SA). The remaining sizes are steel only.
3) Can I use this plug to close an unused hub in a Class I Division 1 area?
Yes, that is exactly what it is for. The PLG plug carries a Class I, Division 1 hazardous rating, so it can close an unused conduit opening in an area where ignitable gas or vapor concentrations can be present under normal operation. A standard hardware-store pipe plug is not an equivalent substitute in a classified area.
4) Will a Crouse-Hinds PLG plug thread into IMC as well as rigid steel conduit?
Yes. The PLG is built for Rigid/IMC systems, so it threads into either rigid steel conduit or intermediate metal conduit, along with the tapered NPT hubs on hazardous-location fittings and enclosures. It is not intended for EMT, which is not threaded.
5) Does the PLG conduit plug meet NEC and Canadian code requirements?
The PLG plug is built to NEC/CEC standards, which is what lets it be used on both US and Canadian installations without swapping product lines. For classified areas the governing point is the Class I, Division 1 rating, and the plug carries it.
6) Is a conduit plug the same thing as a sealing fitting for hazardous locations?
No, and they are not interchangeable. The PLG plug closes an unused threaded opening. A seal fitting is what you pour compound into to block the passage of gas and flame along a conduit run carrying conductors, and the code requires those at boundaries and at enclosures regardless of how many spare hubs you plug. If your open hub has wire going through it, you need a seal, not a plug.
7) Which PLG plug do I order for a paint spray booth or solvent handling area?
Any PLG in the trade size matching the opening will do for those areas, since the whole PLG line is rated Class I, Division 1 and the line is called out for spray booths, solvent handling, refineries, tank farms and chemical plants. Where the solvent or atmosphere is hard on steel, go to the copper-free aluminum SA version, available in 3/4, 2, 3, 3-1/2 and 4 inch.
