1) Will the Eaton FD2225L work on a 480V three-phase panel?
The FD2225L is a two-pole breaker rated 600 Vac and 250 Vdc, so it is voltage-suitable for a 480V system, but with only two poles it protects two-phase (line-to-line) loads, not a three-phase load. For a three-phase branch you need the three-pole version of the FD frame. Interrupting capacity at 480 Vac is 35 kAIC, and 65 kAIC at 240 Vac, so check that against the available fault current at your panel.
2) Is the FD2225L a complete breaker or just a trip unit I have to build up?
It ships as a complete molded case circuit breaker on the Eaton Series C F-frame, with line and load terminals included. There is no separate trip unit or rating plug to order, the thermal and magnetic elements are fixed at 225A.
3) Can the trip setting on the FD2225L be adjusted in the field?
No. The FD2225L uses a fixed thermal, fixed magnetic trip unit, so neither the long-time nor the instantaneous setting can be dialed. If your coordination study calls for an adjustable instantaneous, you need an FD breaker with an adjustable magnetic trip or an electronic trip unit instead.
4) Will an FD2225L drop into an existing Eaton F-frame space in my panelboard?
It is built on the Eaton Series C F-frame, so it shares the F-frame footprint: 3.38 in long, 2.75 in wide, 2.75 in high, 4.5 lb. Two-pole F-frame breakers mount in the space an existing two-pole F-frame occupies. Confirm the panel interior is rated for the 225A frame ampacity before swapping up from a lower-amp breaker.
5) Is 35 kAIC enough for my service, or do I need a higher interrupting rating?
At 480 Vac the FD2225L interrupts 35 kA; at 240 Vac it interrupts 65 kA. Compare that to the available fault current at the point of installation from your short-circuit study. If your 480V available fault current exceeds 35 kA, this breaker is not rated for the location unless it is applied as part of a series-rated combination documented by the manufacturer.
6) Can I use the FD2225L on a DC application like a solar or battery disconnect?
The breaker carries a 250 Vdc rating alongside 600 Vac, so it can be applied on DC circuits up to 250 volts. It is also rated 50-60 Hz on the AC side, which covers both 60 Hz North American and 50 Hz systems.
7) What does the FD in Eaton FD2225L mean, and how do I read the rest of the number?
FD is the Eaton Series C breaker type built on the F-frame. In FD2225L, the 2 is the pole count (two-pole) and 225 is the amperage rating, 225A. It is the complete breaker with line and load terminals, MPN FD2225L.
