Honeywell PLS731B1001/U – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Honeywell EconoSwitch PLS731B1001/U need a neutral wire?
Yes. The EconoSwitch PLS731B1001/U is a single pole, 3-wire device: line, load and neutral. If the box you are replacing only has a switch leg and no neutral pulled to it, this timer will not install there without running a neutral.
2) Can I run a 1 HP pump or exhaust fan motor off this Honeywell timer switch?
Yes, up to 1 HP at 120 Vac. The EconoSwitch handles motor loads that size, which covers most circulator pumps, attic fans and commercial exhaust fans on a 120 V branch. It also carries 2400 W resistive or inductive, and 20 A at 120 V inductive. Anything on 208, 240 or 277 V is out, this is a 120 Vac device only.
3) Will the Honeywell EconoSwitch work with LED and CFL lamps, or does it only handle incandescent?
It works with both. The switch is rated for incandescent, halogen and fluorescent lighting, electronic ballasts, and it is compatible with CFLs and LEDs. That matters if you are retiming a fixture bank that has already been relamped to LED, since a lot of older mechanical timers were incandescent only.
4) Can I put two of these Honeywell timers on the same light from different doorways, like a 3-way?
No. This is a single pole device wired line, load and neutral. It has no traveler terminals, so it cannot replace one half of a 3-way pair. For a light controlled from two locations you need a 3-way capable control, not this timer.
5) Can staff still turn the lights on and off by hand if they are on a Honeywell EconoSwitch timer?
Yes. The EconoSwitch runs in manual mode as a conventional on/off switch or in automatic mode on its schedule. The programming buttons sit behind a panel that itself acts as the on-off switch, so a tenant or crew member can flip it like a normal wall switch without getting into the program.
6) How many on/off events per day can I schedule on the Honeywell PLS731B1001/U?
Seven on and seven off events, set on a weekly/daily program. That is enough to split a day into multiple occupied and unoccupied blocks, or to give different days of the week different schedules, for example shorter hours on weekends in a common area or parking lot lighting circuit.
7) Will the Honeywell EconoSwitch fit in a standard single-gang box with other devices?
The device body measures 1-13/16 in. wide x 2-23/32 in. high x 1-19/32 in. deep (43 x 68 x 40 mm). The 1-19/32 in. depth is the number to watch in a shallow old-work box or a box already crowded with conductors, since the timer needs that clearance behind the plate plus room for the line, load and neutral splices.
8) Can I install this Honeywell timer switch in an unheated garage, barn or outbuilding?
Operating range is -15 C to 50 C (5 F to 122 F), so an unheated but enclosed space in a moderate climate is fine. Below 5 F it is outside its operating band. Shipping and storage tolerate a bit more, -20 C to 50 C (-4 F to 122 F). Treat it as an indoor, dry-location wall device in either case.
9) What color is the Honeywell PLS731B1001/U and is there another finish?
PLS731B1001/U is the almond EconoSwitch. That is the one model under this part number, so if the rest of the devices on the wall are white or ivory, the almond face is what you will be matching against.
