Honeywell PLS750C1000/U – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Honeywell EconoSwitch PLS750C1000/U need a neutral wire in the box?
Yes. The EconoSwitch wires as single pole 3 wire, line, load and neutral, so there has to be a neutral in the switch box. In a 3-way (multiswitch) setup it takes 4 wires: line, load, neutral and the three-way traveler. Older boxes with only a switch loop and no neutral will not work without pulling a neutral.
2) Can I use the PLS750C1000/U timer to run a pump or exhaust fan motor?
Yes, it's rated for motor loads up to 1 HP at 120 Vac, which covers typical pool and circulation pumps, exhaust fans and similar small motors. It is a 120 Vac 60 Hz device only, so a 240 V pump is out of scope.
3) Can the PLS750C1000/U be used in a 3-way circuit with a second switch?
Yes. It supports a multiswitch (3-way) hookup using 4 wires: line, load, neutral and the three-way traveler. That lets you keep a second conventional switch at the other end of a hallway or stairwell while the timer runs the schedule.
4) What is the maximum lighting load on the Honeywell EconoSwitch?
Maximum load is 15 A at 120 Vac, 1800 W resistive, and 12 A at 120 Vac, 1440 W for tungsten (incandescent) lighting. There is no minimum load, so it will hold a single small LED or CFL fixture without dropping out.
5) Will this timer switch work with LED and CFL fixtures, or only incandescent?
The EconoSwitch handles incandescent, halogen and fluorescent lighting plus electronic ballasts, and it is compatible with CFLs. Since it has no minimum load requirement, low-wattage lamps still switch reliably. It is a timer, not a dimmer, so it switches fixtures fully on and off.
6) How many on/off events can I program per week on the Honeywell EconoSwitch?
It holds 21 on and 21 off events on a weekly/daily schedule, so you can run a different pair of events for each day of the week, or stack three a day on the same pattern. It also has a solar timetable mode that shifts events with sunrise and sunset, and a random mode.
7) What does the solar timetable setting actually do on this switch?
Solar timetable programming ties the schedule to sunrise and sunset rather than a fixed clock time, so exterior lighting tracks the seasons without a property manager going back to re-set it every few weeks. Random mode is the other scheduling option, varying the on/off times to make an unoccupied building look occupied.
8) Can staff still switch the lights on and off by hand, or is it schedule only?
Manual operation is one of the three operating modes, alongside automatic and random, so the device works as a conventional on/off switch whenever someone needs to override the program at the wall.
9) Is this timer switch UL listed for commercial installations?
The EconoSwitch carries both Underwriters Laboratories and Canadian Underwriters Laboratories approval, which covers jobs on either side of the border.
10) Can I install this timer in an unheated garage or outdoor-rated enclosure?
Operating range is -15 C to 50 C (5 F to 122 F), so an unheated garage or mechanical room in most climates is fine, but sustained sub-freezing exposure is outside spec. Shipping and storage tolerate -40 C to 60 C (-40 F to 140 F).
11) What size is the Honeywell PLS750C1000/U switch body and will it fit a standard gang box?
The device measures 1-13/16 in. wide x 2-23/32 in. high x 1-13/16 in. deep (43 x 68 x 43 mm). The 1-13/16 in. depth is the number to check against how crowded your existing box is, since a shallow box packed with conductors is the usual problem on a retrofit.
12) Will the Honeywell EconoSwitch lose its program during a power outage?
There is two hours of battery backup to ride through an outage, so the clock and schedule stay intact on short interruptions.
