1) Will the Klein ET60 voltage tester read DC as well as AC?
Yes, the ET60 covers 12 to 600 V on both AC and DC, so it works on control circuits, battery and DC-powered gear as well as line-voltage AC. On AC it is specified for 45Hz to 66Hz, which covers 50 and 60 Hz mains but means it is not a tool for variable-frequency drive output frequencies.
2) Is a CAT IV 600V tester enough for service entrance and meter work?
CAT IV 600V is the rating the ET60 carries, and CAT IV is the category intended for the origin of the installation: service entrance, meter socket, outdoor drops and the utility side. It is also rated Pollution Degree 2, the normal indoor/general environment classification. For anything above 600V, this is the wrong instrument.
3) Why does low input impedance matter when troubleshooting a circuit?
On long parallel runs and switch legs, capacitive coupling puts a phantom voltage on a conductor that isn't actually energized. A high-impedance meter will display that ghost voltage and send you chasing nothing. The ET60 is a low input impedance design, so it loads the circuit enough to bleed off stray voltage and only indicates where real source voltage exists. That makes it a better first tool than a DMM for dead-circuit verification, though a DMM is still what you want for an exact numeric reading.
