Emtek 1863-FB – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Emtek 1863 multi point trim include the multi point lock itself?
No. The 1863 is trim only, plates and handles for a swinging patio door. The multi point mortise lock body has to be ordered separately. If you're replacing worn or damaged handles on a door where the multi point mechanism still works, that's exactly what this set is for. If you're building the opening from scratch, the lock case is a separate line on the order.
2) What is the center-to-center spacing on the Emtek 1863 trim, and will it line up with my existing multi point lock?
5-1/4 inches center to center, and that number is what decides the fit. The 1863 is cut for Door Configuration #8 with the cylinder position above the handle. If your existing multi point lock has a different handle-to-cylinder spacing or puts the cylinder below the handle, this plate will not land on the existing prep. Measure from the center of the spindle hole to the center of the cylinder hole on the door before ordering.
3) Is there a keyed cylinder on the Emtek 1863, or just a thumbturn?
Non-keyed. The 1863 has an American style thumbturn on the interior and no key cylinder, so it locks and unlocks from inside only. On a swinging patio door that opens to a fenced yard or a deck, that's usually what you want. If the door needs to be keyed from the outside, this is the wrong configuration and you need the keyed version of the same trim.
4) Do I have to specify handing when ordering Emtek 1863 multi point trim?
Yes, handing is a required choice, right hand or left hand. Multi point trim is handed because the lever and the thumbturn have to sit correctly relative to the hinge side. Stand outside the door: if the hinges are on your right, it's right hand. Get this wrong and the lever ends up upside down. Lever style is also required at order time, and door thickness is an optional field you can call out if your slab is not standard.
5) Will Emtek 1863 trim work on a Neuma patio door?
Neuma Doors is the referenced door manufacturer for this trim, so the Configuration #8 layout with 5-1/4 inch center to center is the pattern it's built against. Confirm your slab is prepped to Config #8, because Emtek trim is sold per door configuration and the plates only drop onto the matching prep.
6) What lever styles can I get with the Emtek 1863 sandcast bronze trim?
Ten sandcast bronze levers pair with the 1863: Aurora, Bryce, Cimarron, Cody, Durango, Lariat, Mariposa, Montrose, Teton, and Yuma. Any sandcast bronze lever in the line can be ordered with this trim, so you can match levers already hung on interior doors in the same house. The lever is a required selection, not a default.
7) How big are the plates on the Emtek 1863, and will they cover my old trim?
The plates measure 2 x 10 inches in a rectangular profile. That's a narrow plate, so it suits a patio door stile without crowding the glass, but it will not hide a larger footprint left behind by wider or arched trim. If you're covering an existing cutout, compare it against 2 x 10 before you commit.
8) Are the levers on Emtek multi point trim prone to sagging over time?
Spring assist is built into the trim now. It returns the lever to the neutral horizontal position and is there specifically to stop the drooping handle problem that shows up on heavier patio door levers. If you're replacing a sagging set, the current trim addresses that.
9) Is the Emtek 1863 solid bronze or a bronze finish over another metal?
Solid sandcast bronze, both the material and the substrate. Sandcast means it's poured in a mold, so the surface carries some texture and slight variation from piece to piece. That's characteristic of the process, not a defect, and it's why these read differently from stamped or forged trim on a wall of samples.
10) Is there a powered or smart lock version of the Emtek 1863 patio trim?
No. The 1863 is mechanical, non-electronic trim with a thumbturn. There's no motor, no keypad, and no wiring to run through the door. If the project calls for access control on the patio door, this trim isn't the path to it.
