1) Does the Emtek 2404 doorbell come with the button, or do I order the plate and button separately?
The 2404 ships as a complete unit: the Wilshire rosette plate, a lighted push button, and matching screws in the same finish. The screws are not sold separately, so if you lose them you're sourcing your own fasteners. Nothing else to add on the order form beyond picking a finish.
2) What finishes does the Emtek 2404 Wilshire doorbell come in so I can match my existing entry hardware?
Ten finishes: Oil Rubbed Bronze (US10B), Polished Nickel (US14), Satin Nickel (US15), Pewter (US15A), Flat Black (US19), Polished Chrome (US26), Polished Brass Lifetime (US3), Unlacquered Brass (US3NL), Satin Brass (US4), and French Antique (US7). Those are standard US finish codes, so match the code on your existing Emtek entry set or handleset and the doorbell will read as part of the same suite. The screws come in the matching finish too.
3) I want a different rosette shape than the Wilshire. What other Emtek American Classic doorbell plates are there?
Emtek's American Classic brass doorbells run across seven rosette shapes, and the model number is what changes: 2400 regular, 2402 oval, 2403 rectangular, 2404 Wilshire, 2408 the #8 rosette, 2409 Quincy, and 2466 Watford. Same brass construction and lighted button across them, so pick on the shape that suits the door casing. If you want a longer vertical plate instead of a rosette, the STRETTO plates are 2440 at 1-1/2 by 5 inches and 2441 at 1-1/2 by 11 inches.
4) Is the Emtek 2404 doorbell button lighted, and does that mean it needs its own power?
The button is lighted. It's an illuminated pushbutton wired into a standard low-voltage doorbell circuit, the same two transformer-fed wires that feed an unlit button, so there is no separate supply to run. It is an electronic device, not a purely mechanical plate.
5) Is the Emtek 2404 doorbell suitable for a commercial building or is it a residential part?
Emtek lists the 2404 as residential. It's a decorative brass entry doorbell meant for houses and multi-family entries where the look matters and it will be pressed a handful of times a day. For a high-traffic commercial entrance, a lobby door, or anything on an access control system, this isn't the part to spec.
6) What is the Emtek 2404 doorbell plate made of, and will it hold up outdoors?
Solid brass, both the plate and the substrate. Brass is the usual choice for exterior entry trim because it doesn't rust. One finish choice matters here: Unlacquered Brass (US3NL) is left bare and will patina and darken with weather and handling, which is the point of it. If you want the finish to stay put on a covered or uncovered entry, take Polished Brass Lifetime (US3) or one of the plated finishes instead.
7) I have Emtek bronze or wrought iron hardware. Is there a matching doorbell instead of the brass one?
Yes, and you'd want a different model number rather than the 2404. Emtek's sandcast bronze doorbells are 2421 through 2425 (#1, #2, #3, #4 and #6 rosettes), the Tuscany lost wax cast bronze ones are 2411, 2412, 2414 and 2415, and the wrought steel ones are 2431, 2432 and 2433. The 2404 is the brass collection, so it will match brass and plated entry sets, not a cast bronze or wrought steel suite.
8) Can I use the Emtek 2404 to replace my existing doorbell button without rewiring?
In most cases yes, because it's a plate and pushbutton on the same low-voltage bell wire your current button uses, not a new system. What to check before you order is the mounting: the Wilshire rosette is a round decorative plate, so if you're coming off a tall rectangular builder button you may be left with exposed paint or drilling outside the old footprint. Hold the rosette over the existing opening and confirm it covers before you pull the old one.
9) If I'm building out a whole entry, does Emtek make a contemporary doorbell instead of a traditional rosette?
The 2404 Wilshire is a traditional American Classic shape. For a modern entry the contemporary doorbells are 2457 Modern, 2458 Disk, 2459 Square, 2460 Neos, 2463 Modern Rectangular and 2465 Urban Modern. There's also an Arts and Crafts pair, 2451 and 2452 hammered, and an American Designer group with 2401 rope, 2406 Lancaster and 2407 ribbon and reed.
