1) Does the Emtek 2408 doorbell come with the button, or do I have to buy the button separately?
The 2408 ships as a complete trim set: the #8 rosette plate, a lighted push button, and matching screws in the same finish. The screws only come with the set, so don't plan on sourcing them on their own later. What it does not include is the chime unit or the transformer inside the house. This is the exterior push button and plate, so the wiring and chime behind the wall stay whatever you already have.
2) I like the Emtek doorbell but want a round or rectangular plate instead of the #8 rosette. What model do I order?
Stay in the American Classic group and change the number. Regular rosette is 2400, oval is 2402, rectangular is 2403, #8 is 2408, Quincy is 2409, Watford is 2466, and Wilshire is 2404. All of them are the same brass doorbell with a different plate shape. If you want a longer vertical plate instead of a rosette, the STRETTO plates are 2440 at 1-1/2 x 5 inches and 2441 at 1-1/2 x 11 inches.
3) Will the Emtek 2408 doorbell match the knobs and levers already on my doors?
It's finished in the same US codes Emtek uses across its trim, so matching is a matter of ordering the same code. The 2408 comes in Polished Brass Lifetime (US3), Unlacquered Brass (US3NL), Satin Brass (US4), French Antique (US7), Oil Rubbed Bronze (US10B), Polished Nickel (US14), Satin Nickel (US15), Pewter (US15A), Flat Black (US19), and Polished Chrome (US26). Note that US3NL is unlacquered, so it will darken and patina outdoors while the lifetime US3 will not.
4) Is the Emtek 2408 doorbell button lighted, and does that need any special wiring?
The button is lighted. It runs off the same low voltage bell circuit as an unlit button, so on a standard transformer-and-chime setup there is no extra wire to pull. It is an electrified device, which is worth knowing if you are replacing a purely mechanical button on an old opening and the existing bell wiring has been abandoned.
5) Can I use the Emtek 2408 brass doorbell on a commercial building entrance?
Emtek classes the 2408 as residential trim, and that's the honest fit for it. Solid brass with a decorative rosette plate suits a house, a townhome, or the front door of a small multi-family unit. For a school, hospital, or high-traffic commercial entry, a property manager is usually better served by a purpose-built commercial push button, since the 2408 carries no commercial duty rating.
6) I want a hammered or wrought iron look doorbell instead of a polished brass one. Does Emtek make that?
Yes, in other material families. Arts and Crafts covers 2451 for the Arts and Craft rosette and 2452 for the hammered rosette. Wrought Steel runs 2431, 2432, and 2433 for the #1, #2, and #3 rosettes. Sandcast bronze runs 2421 through 2425, and Tuscany lost wax cast bronze is 2411, 2412, 2414, and 2415. The 2408 itself is the American Classic brass version, so if you're after a forged or cast texture, order out of one of those families instead.
7) What is the Emtek 2408 doorbell plate actually made of, and will it hold up outdoors?
Solid brass, both the plate and the substrate under the finish, not plated zinc or plastic. Brass is the reason these hold up in weather. The finish decides the look over time more than the metal does: a lifetime plated finish like Polished Brass US3 stays put, while Unlacquered Brass US3NL is bare brass that will tone down and patina with exposure, which some buyers want on a period house.
8) Is the Emtek 2408 a modern looking doorbell, or is it traditional?
Traditional. The 2408 is from Emtek's American Classic line, a turned brass rosette plate. For a flat contemporary profile you'd go to the Contemporary codes instead: 2458 for the disk rosette, 2459 for the square rosette, 2463 for the modern rectangular, or 2465 for urban modern.
