Emtek 3037 Hercules Knurled Full Length Mortise Entrance Handleset, Brass - Dummy

  • Can be ordered with any Brass Knob or Lever for the inside trim
  • Sold as complete set
  • Handing required for All Mortise Locks

This Mortise Lock Handleset is available in 3 Functions:

Single Cylinder Mortise Sideplates are locked/unlocked with a key from the exterior and locked/unlocked from the inside of the home with a thumbturn.

  • The F20 Function Mortise box has buttons on the edge of the door that allow you to set the box to lock behind you as you leave the home, or another button to keep the door unlocked. This button setting is reset each time the door is locked.
  • The F13 Function Mortise Box does not have the buttons on the edge of the box. This set will only lock when activated with a key outside or thumbturn inside.

Dummy: If you have a double front door where one side is generally inactive while the other is always active, you will need a combination of two sideplate locks. For the active side, you'll need a single cylinder sideplate. For the inactive door, you'll want to order a dummy sideplate. This gives you the look of a complete working set, but doesn't have all of the mechanisms - perfect for an inactive door.

Warranty

Emtek covers it's door hardware with a 5 yr finish and mechanical warranty. Living finishes are not covered under this warranty as they are designed to change over time. For more information see Emtek Door Hardware Warranty.

If you need to return an item, please repack the door hardware in it's original packaging to assure that it arrives undamaged. For more return information see our Returns Page. Emtek 3038-RH-US26 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is a dummy handleset for on a double front door?
On a pair of front doors where one leaf stays inactive, the inactive leaf takes a dummy sideplate and the active leaf takes a single cylinder mortise sideplate. The Emtek 3038 Hercules Knurled handleset in dummy function is the inactive-side half: it gives you the matching full length exterior sideplate look with no lock mechanism behind it. It does not latch, lock, or accept a key.
2) Do I have to specify handing on an Emtek dummy mortise handleset?
Yes, and it is not optional. Emtek requires handing on all mortise locks, and the 3038 Hercules Knurled set is ordered as left hand or right hand for an in-swing door. Since a dummy is normally paired with the active leaf's working sideplate, order the dummy in the handing that puts the thumbpiece and lever on the correct side of the inactive door.
3) Will an Emtek Hercules Knurled mortise handleset fit a 1-3/4 inch door?
1-3/4 inches is the standard door thickness for the Hercules Knurled mortise entrance handleset, and the prep is standard mortise per ANSI A115.1. Thicker doors are handled, but the thickness has to be called out when the order is placed; there is a door thickness field on the order for exactly that.
4) Can I put a dummy mortise handleset on a door that has no mortise pocket cut?
You still need the standard mortise prep. The 3038 is built on the Emtek mortise platform and calls for a standard mortise door prep to ANSI A115.1, so an inactive leaf that was never mortised has to be prepped before the sideplate will mount. If the inactive door is not already mortised, a tubular-style dummy handleset is the easier route, for example the Weslock 6695 Belmont dummy handleset with Impresa knob, which covers 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors.
5) What is the closest equivalent to the Emtek 3038 Hercules Knurled handleset for the inactive leaf of a double door if I am not using Emtek?
The Weslock 6695 Belmont Dummy Handleset with Impresa Knob is the nearest match in intent: it is a dummy-function handleset, the same function the Emtek 3038 serves on an inactive leaf, and Weslock lists it for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch thick. The difference is the lock body behind it. The Emtek 3038 is a mortise handleset, so the inactive leaf gets a standard mortise pocket prep, while the Weslock 6695 is a surface-applied dummy trim. If the inactive door is already mortise-prepped to match its active mate, the Emtek keeps both leaves on the same prep; if you are starting from a blank or bored door, the Weslock avoids cutting a mortise pocket you will never use.
6) What should I order for the active leaf if I am putting an Emtek 3038 dummy on the inactive leaf?
The Emtek 3038 Hercules Knurled is dummy function, meaning it carries no latch or cylinder, so the active leaf needs a working entrance set. Among mortise-trim options, the Baldwin Estates 6542 Tremont Single Cylinder Entry Mortise Trim is entrance function for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Baldwin Estates 6542 Tremont Double Cylinder Entry Mortise Trim is the same trim in double cylinder, also for 1-3/4 inch doors. Single cylinder gives you key outside and thumbturn inside; double cylinder requires a key on both sides, which matters when there is glass within reach of the inside lever. Note that the 3038 is Emtek styling and the 6542 is Baldwin styling, so the two leaves will not visually match - for a matched pair the active leaf should be the Emtek mortise sideplate in the same Hercules Knurled pattern.
7) Is a Schlage JE285 Barcelona non-keyed handleset the same thing as an Emtek 3038 dummy?
No, and this is a common mix-up. The Schlage Residential JE285 Barcelona with Seville Lever is non-keyed but its function is entrance, meaning it has a working latch that retracts when you turn the lever - it operates the door, it just does not lock with a key. It is Grade 2 and fits 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. The Emtek 3038 Hercules Knurled is dummy function: no latch, no moving mechanism, it is trim that mounts to a leaf that stays shut. If you want a handle that opens the door without a key, the JE285 is the one; if you want the look of a set on a leaf held by flush bolts, the 3038 is the one. Putting a dummy where a working latch is needed leaves the door with nothing holding it.
8) What backset does the Emtek 3038 mortise handleset use?
Two backsets are offered on the Emtek Hercules Knurled mortise entrance sets, 2-1/2 inch and 2-3/4 inch. That is a mortise backset measured to the center of the lock case, not the tubular 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 you would use on a bored door. Match whichever backset the active-leaf sideplate is ordered in so both leaves of the pair line up.
9) Do I choose the interior knob or lever separately on an Emtek mortise handleset?
Yes, and it is a required choice on the order. The Hercules Knurled set ships as a complete set with any Emtek brass knob or lever selected for the inside trim, and the list runs from levers like Hercules, Stuttgart, Helios, Athena and Cortina through knobs including the Ace Knurled, Spoke, Orb, Egg and Victoria, plus crystal options such as Bristol, Windsor and Modern Square. Pick the same interior style you used on the active leaf so the pair reads as one set.
10) What finishes does the Emtek Hercules Knurled brass handleset come in?
Six finishes across both handings: Oil Rubbed Bronze (US10B), Satin Nickel (US15), Flat Black (US19), Polished Chrome (US26), Unlacquered Brass (US3NL) and Satin Brass (US4). Unlacquered brass is a living finish, so it will darken and patina with handling rather than staying as delivered. The body is solid brass under all six.
11) Is the Emtek 3038 handleset keyed, and what keyway do the working versions use?
The dummy version takes no cylinder at all, so there is nothing to key. Its keyed siblings on the Emtek brass mortise entrance platform run Schlage C keyway, which matters if you are keying the active leaf alike to the rest of the house.
12) What is the difference between the F20 and F13 mortise functions on Emtek entrance handlesets?
Both are single cylinder mortise boxes, keyed outside and thumbturn inside. The F20 case adds buttons on the door edge that let you set the lock to latch behind you on the way out, or hold it unlocked, and that setting resets each time the door is locked. The F13 case has no edge buttons at all, so it only locks by key outside or thumbturn inside. Neither applies to the dummy sideplate, which has no lock case, but it decides what you order for the active leaf.
13) I need a dummy handleset for a thicker than standard door, what are my options?
The Emtek 3038 mortise set is built around 1-3/4 inch as standard and thicker doors have to be specified when ordering. If you would rather work from a published range, the Weslock 6695 Belmont dummy handleset with Impresa knob and the Weslock 2815 Hillcrest dummy handleset with New Heaven lever both cover 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors. Those are tubular sets, not mortise, so they are a different prep.
14) Is the Emtek mortise entrance handleset fire rated?
The Emtek brass UL mortise entrance handleset platform carries a UL 180 minute fire rating. Note that the dummy sideplate itself carries no latching mechanism, so on a fire rated opening the latching hardware has to come from the active leaf's mortise lock.
15) Can I match an Emtek mortise dummy to a Baldwin or Deltana handleset already on the other door?
Order both leaves from the same series. The Emtek 3038 Hercules Knurled sideplate is dimensioned and styled to the Emtek brass mortise entrance platform, and mixing brands across a pair leaves you with mismatched plate lengths and profiles. If the working leaf is Baldwin Estates mortise trim, the 6542 Tremont is offered in both single cylinder and double cylinder entry versions for 1-3/4 inch doors, and Deltana's Hanover, Montego, St. Ann and Kingston handlesets are each their own family to match within.
16) I want a dummy handleset with a lever inside instead of a knob - what are my options?
Two routes. The Emtek 3038 Hercules Knurled mortise handleset is ordered as a complete set with the inside trim chosen at order time, and the lever choices include the Hercules Lever, Athena, Poseidon, Triton, Stuttgart and Helios among others, so the exterior grip and interior lever are specified together. The Weslock 2815 Hillcrest Dummy Handleset ships as a fixed pairing with the New Heaven Lever and covers doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. Pick the Emtek when the inside lever has to match levers already hung elsewhere in the house; pick the Weslock 2815 when the New Heaven lever is acceptable and you want the pairing already decided.
17) My door is thicker than 1-3/4 inch - what handlesets cover that?
The Emtek 3038 Hercules Knurled mortise handleset is built to 1-3/4 inch as standard and takes a specified thicker door at order time, with a door thickness field entered with the order. Among peers, the Weslock 1411 Traditionale Colonial with Eleganti Knob covers 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch, and the Yale Real Living BYRD226NRRX Assure Lock Standalone Touchscreen Deadbolt with Ridgefield Handleset covers 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch as well. The Weslock 1411 is single cylinder mechanical; the Yale BYRD226NRRX is a standalone electronic touchscreen deadbolt, so it changes how the door is operated, not just its trim. Note the Emtek 3038 is dummy function, so it is only a like-for-like swap against those two if the opening genuinely needs a non-operating set.
18) Which solid brass handlesets compare with the Emtek 3038 Hercules Knurled?
The Emtek 3038 Hercules Knurled is solid brass and comes in Oil Rubbed Bronze (US10B), Satin Nickel (US15), Flat Black (US19), Polished Chrome (US26), Unlacquered Brass (US3NL) and Satin Brass (US4). On the peer side, Deltana lists three solid brass entry handlesets: the 803871B Hanover, the 815871 St. Ann and the 825871 Kingston. All three are entry function with a working latch, where the Emtek 3038 is dummy function, so they are material peers rather than function peers. If the goal is a solid brass set on the leaf that actually opens, the Deltana entry sets are the ones to look at; if the goal is brass trim on a leaf that stays shut, the 3038 is the match.
19) Does the Emtek 3038 need handing specified the way other handlesets do?
Yes - the Emtek 3038 Hercules Knurled is ordered as Left Hand (In-Swing Door) or Right Hand (In-Swing Door), and handing is required for all mortise locks. That is a mortise trait. Tubular peers like the Sure-Loc Coral Handleset with Adjustable Backset and the Sure-Loc Alta Tubular Handleset are ordered without handing because the tubular latch reverses in the field. If you are specifying a double door and are unsure which leaf is which, get the handing right before the order goes in: a mortise box built to the wrong hand is not something you flip on the jobsite.
20) I need a graded handleset for a rental property - what should I look at instead of the Emtek 3038?
The Emtek 3038 Hercules Knurled is a residential brass mortise set. If your spec calls for a stated grade, the Master Lock HDLB Series HDLBA0615/4D single cylinder deadbolt handleset is Grade 2 entrance, and the Schlage Residential F60 Addison Single Cylinder Keyed Entry Handleset with Accent Lever is Grade 2 entrance for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. The Kwikset 687AMD SMT Amador and 687BW SMT Belleview single cylinder handlesets are Grade 3 entrance for 1-3/4 inch doors and ship exterior only, so interior trim is ordered separately. Grade aside, all four are keyed entry sets, while the Emtek 3038 is dummy - so they replace it only where the leaf needs to lock.
21) Can I use an electronic handleset on the inactive leaf where the Emtek 3038 would go?
No. Electronic handlesets such as the Yale Real Living BYRD226CBARX Assure Lock Wi-Fi Bluetooth Touchscreen Deadbolt with Ridgefield Handleset and the Kwikset 815SCEHFL-CP913CNT San Clemente Handleset with Halifax Lever and Contemporary Smartcode Keypad Electronic Deadbolt are built around a working deadbolt and a keypad, and they need a bored deadbolt hole and battery access in the door. An inactive leaf held by flush bolts has nothing for that deadbolt to throw into and no reason to carry a keypad. The Emtek 3038 Hercules Knurled is non-electronic dummy trim, which is what that leaf calls for. Put the electronic set on the active leaf if you want keypad entry, and keep the dummy on the inactive one.
22) Is this Emtek handleset a commercial-rated product or residential?
The Hercules Knurled full length mortise entrance handleset is a residential product in Emtek's brass collection, with a contemporary profile. If you are specifying for a commercial opening under a hardware schedule, look at Grade 1 or Grade 2 hardware instead; among residential handlesets we carry, the Schlage F60 Addison with Accent lever and the Master Lock HDLB Series single cylinder deadbolt handleset are both Grade 2.
23) Which handlesets come as a matched exterior and interior set rather than exterior only?
The Emtek 3038 Hercules Knurled is sold as a complete set, with the inside knob or lever selected at order time from the brass range. Peers that also arrive as a matched pair include the Baldwin Wesley Handleset x Alcott Knob and the Baldwin Wesley Handleset x Carnaby Knob, both entrance function, and the Weslock 2810 Hillcrest Single Cylinder Handleset with Hudson Knob for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors. By contrast the Kwikset 687AMD SMC Amador with SC1 Keyway SmartKey is exterior only, so its interior trim is a second line on the order. The Emtek route is the flexible one - one exterior style against roughly ninety interior knob and lever patterns - while the Baldwin and Weslock pairings are fixed combinations.
24) What is the difference between the Emtek 3038 and a full-length handleset like the Deltana Montego?
Both are full-length exterior handlesets, but they are prepped differently. The Emtek 3038 Hercules Knurled is a mortise set on a Schlage C keyway with a 2-1/2 inch or 2-3/4 inch backset and a UL 180 minute fire rating on the working versions of the sideplate. The Deltana 810871 Montego Handleset covers doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. The Montego's wider thickness range suits a door that is not a standard 1-3/4 inch slab, while the Emtek's mortise box and Schlage C keyway suit a build that is already keyed to Schlage C and mortise-prepped throughout.
