Emtek 3143 Charleston Mortise Entrance Lockset - Dummy

No latch, no bolt, no operation. The 3143 Charleston is a dummy set, so the knob or lever is fixed and the escutcheon is surface mounted as a pull. Use it on the inactive leaf of a pair or on a door that stays closed against a ball catch or roller catch. If the door needs to latch, you want a functioning mortise lock instead, not this one.

Handing is required. The Charleston 3143 is ordered left hand or right hand, and both are offered in every finish. Stand outside the door, on the side the hinges are not visible from: if the hinges are on your left it is a left hand door. Ordering the wrong hand means the escutcheon and trim orientation is wrong for the opening.

The Charleston 3143 ships as a complete set, but you pick the inside knob or lever yourself at the time of order, and that choice is required. The list runs from brass knobs and levers (Egg, Providence, Waverly, Rope, Ribbon and Reed, Cortina, Milano, Turino) through crystal and porcelain (Windsor, Georgetown, Hampton, Old Town, Diamond, Ebony, Ice White) to the modern L-Square, T-Bar and R-Bar bar styles in faceted, hammered, knurled, Tribeca and white marble. Nothing is bought separately, but the order is incomplete until that style is named.

Standard mortise pocket per ANSI A115.1, with a 2-1/2 inch or 2-3/4 inch backset. If your door already carries an A115.1 mortise prep from another brand, the pocket geometry matches; confirm which of the two backsets your existing prep was cut to, because the cross bore for the spindle sits at that distance from the door edge.

Residential. The Charleston 3143 is solid brass trim on an Emtek mortise body and it is built for houses and high-end multi-family, not for a school corridor or a commercial entrance. For a commercial opening, look at Grade 1 mortise locksets: the Corbin Russwin ML2003 classroom lock, the Cal-Royal NM8080 storeroom, or the Accentra 8805FL storeroom on the 8800 Series. If it is dummy trim you need on a commercial door, the Schlage L0170 is a Grade 1 half dummy on the L Series.

The pocket has to be routed into the door edge to ANSI A115.1, which is a mortising jig or a router template job, not a hole saw. Emtek publishes mortise lock installation instructions and a technical specification sheet covering dimensions and door thickness for its brass UL mortise entrance handlesets, both linked on the product record. Cut the pocket to the backset you ordered, 2-1/2 or 2-3/4 inch.

The 3143 in dummy function takes no cylinder and no key at all. Emtek's keyed mortise entrance sets use the Schlage C keyway, so a house already on Schlage C can be keyed alike across the working doors, and this dummy leaf simply matches them visually in the same finish and trim style.

Order the working leaf as the keyed or entrance version of the Charleston and the fixed leaf as this 3143 dummy, in the same finish and the same knob or lever style. The dummy carries no latch, so the inactive leaf stays held by flush bolts or a surface bolt, which you supply separately. Handing still has to be stated on the dummy so its trim faces correctly.

Baldwin's 6301 entry/apartment mortise lock body runs a 2-1/2 inch backset and is offered knob by knob or lever by lever, and the Baldwin 6310 entry/storeroom body is the same 2-1/2 inch backset for doors 1-3/8 inch and over. The Charleston 3143 also uses a 2-1/2 inch backset option, so the two lines sit in the same prep territory. The difference is function: the Emtek here is dummy trim, the Baldwin bodies are working entrance locks.

Eight, and all eight come in both hands: Oil Rubbed Bronze (US10B), Satin Nickel (US15), Pewter (US15A), Flat Black (US19), Polished Chrome (US26), Polished Brass Lifetime (US3), Unlacquered Brass (US3NL), and French Antique (US7). Unlacquered brass is the one to know about, it has no clear coat and will darken and patina with handling, so pair it with other unlacquered pieces rather than with US3 lifetime polished brass if you want the doors to age together.

The Charleston 3143 is fully mechanical, no electronics and no wiring. If you need keyless or credential access on a mortise prep, the alternatives are electronic mortise locks from other lines: the Dormakaba E-Plex 2066 pushbutton keyless, the Alarm Lock DL3500CR Trilogy with 300 user codes, or the Schlage CO-100 standalone keypad lock. Those are different products on a different prep basis, so check the pocket against each one's own spec.
