1) Will the Emtek 453424 grip by grip handleset fit my door thickness?
The 453424 covers doors from 1-3/8 to 2 inches thick. Standard build is 1-3/4 inch, which is the usual exterior door, so if your door is thinner or thicker than that you enter the actual thickness on the door thickness field when you order and the set is built to it. Outside 1-3/8 to 2 inches it will not work.
2) Will an Emtek sandcast bronze handleset drop into my existing door prep?
It uses a 2-1/8 inch cross bore, the standard prep on nearly every bored residential entry door, with a 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch backset. If your door already has a 2-1/8 inch bore at one of those backsets and is between 1-3/8 and 2 inches thick, no new boring is needed for the lock itself. The grip escutcheons are through-bolted at 5-1/2 inch center to center, so that spacing has to work on your stile.
3) Can I key an Emtek 453424 handleset to my existing Weiser locks?
Yes. The 453424 ships on the Schlage C keyway as standard, but a Weiser WR5 keyway cylinder is offered as a no upcharge substitution and can be keyed into an existing Weiser system. Pick the Weiser (WR5) keyway option when you order. If the rest of the house is on Schlage C, leave it standard.
4) Is the Emtek 453424 single cylinder handleset okay for a door with glass next to it?
Single cylinder means key outside, thumbturn inside, so anyone who can reach the inside of the door can unlock it by hand. On a door with glass in it or a sidelight within arm's reach that is the wrong choice, and you want a double cylinder version that takes a key on both sides. On a solid door with no adjacent glazing, single cylinder is the normal pick and lets you get out without hunting for a key.
5) Is the Emtek Rustic Modern Rectangular handleset suitable for a commercial building entrance?
It is a residential entry set. Sandcast bronze tubular construction with an entry function, built for houses and light residential openings, not for the cycle counts or the code requirements of a commercial front door. For an apartment unit door, a house, or a residential-scale opening it is the right class of product; for a business entrance or a fire rated opening, specify a commercial grade lockset instead.
6) What does grip by grip mean on an entrance handleset, and should I order it instead of a grip with a knob or lever inside?
Grip by grip puts a full thumb-latch style grip on both faces of the door rather than a grip outside and a knob or lever inside. People choose it on front doors where the interior face is seen, or on double doors and gates where both sides read as an exterior. It is a made to order custom function at Emtek and adds 2 to 3 days of build time, so it is not a stock pull. If you want the inside face to be a simple knob or lever, order a standard sectional handleset instead.
7) Can Emtek handlesets be keyed alike to each other for a house with more than one exterior door?
Keyed alike is a free option, so a front, back and side door can all run one key. You choose keyed different or keyed alike at order time, and there is a field for keying to an existing code if you already have a bitting on file and want new locks cut to match. All of it rides on the Schlage C keyway unless you switch to Weiser WR5.
8) Do I need a separate deadbolt with the Emtek 453424 entrance handleset?
No separate deadbolt is needed for the lock to function. The 453424 is a keyed entry set: the key cylinder and the thumbturn are integral to the handleset, with the latch driven by the thumb pieces on the grips. It is a tubular entry lockset, not a passage grip that requires a deadbolt above it to lock the door.
9) How much stile do I need for a 5-1/2 inch center to center handleset?
The 453424 grips mount on 5-1/2 inch centers vertically, which is the fixing spacing between the two sections, and the sections themselves sit on the face of the stile above and below the bore. On a narrow glass-panel door where the stile is only a few inches wide the rectangular escutcheon plates run out of room, so measure the flat width of your stile against the plate before committing. On a standard solid entry door with a wide stile there is no issue.
10) What finishes does the Emtek 453424 sandcast bronze handleset come in, and will it stay the same color?
Three finishes: Flat Black Bronze (453424FB), Medium Bronze (453424MB), and Tumbled White Bronze (453424TWB). All three are on solid sandcast bronze from Emtek's Sandcast Bronze collection, so the color is in a living metal finish rather than a plated coating and it will patina with handling and weather. If you want the inside grip in a different finish from the outside, a split finish can be called out at order time.
11) Can I get the outside of an Emtek handleset in one finish and the inside in another?
Yes, split finish is available on the 453424 as a written option at order time, which is what you use when the exterior needs to match dark bronze exterior hardware while the interior side matches lighter trim inside the house. Since it is a made to order grip by grip build anyway, the split finish goes into the same build.
