Emtek 454515-FB – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What is a grip by grip handleset and how is it different from a standard entry handleset?
Grip by grip means there is a thumb-piece grip handle on both the exterior and the interior of the door, instead of a grip outside and a knob or lever inside. The Emtek 454515 Rectangular handleset is built that way, and Emtek makes it as a custom-order function rather than a stock configuration. It suits a front or back door where you want the same sandcast bronze grip appearance on both faces, common on rustic and heavy timber entries.
2) Does the Emtek 454515 handleset need a key on the inside too?
Yes. It is a double cylinder entry, so the deadbolt is keyed from both faces and there is no interior thumbturn. That gives you security next to sidelights or glass panels, but it also means anyone inside needs a key to unlock the door, which many local codes restrict on a required egress door. If you want a thumbturn inside, look at Emtek's single cylinder version of the same handleset instead.
3) Will this Emtek handleset fit a 2 inch thick entry door?
Yes, the 454515 covers doors from 1-3/8 inch up to 2 inch. It is built for 1-3/4 inch as standard, so if your door is thicker than that you have to state the actual thickness with the order and Emtek builds the spindle and screw pack to suit. There is a door thickness field on the order for exactly that.
4) Can I key this Emtek handleset to match my existing house keys?
Standard cylinders are Schlage C keyway, and you can order it in Weiser WR5 instead at no upcharge by adding a W to the product code, which lets it key into an existing Weiser system. You also choose keyed different or keyed alike at the time of order, and you can supply a key code so the lock arrives cut to your existing key.
5) Will a 5-1/2 inch center-to-center handleset line up with my existing door holes?
The 454515 is drilled 5-1/2 inch center to center between the deadbolt bore and the latch bore. If your door is already bored at that spacing with a 2-1/8 inch cross bore, the plates drop onto the existing prep. If the existing spacing is different, the sandcast bronze backplate may or may not cover the old holes, so check your bore spacing before you pull the old set off.
6) What finishes does the Emtek Rectangular sandcast bronze handleset come in?
Three: Flat Black Bronze (FB), Medium Bronze (MB), and Tumbled White Bronze (TWB). All three are living finishes on solid sandcast bronze, so they patina with handling and weather. If you want the exterior grip in one finish and the interior in another, there is a split finish option you can specify on the order.
7) Is the Emtek 454515 a mortise lock or a tubular lock?
Tubular. The 454515 uses a bored tubular latch and a separate tubular deadbolt, not a mortise case, so the door only needs the two round bores and an edge prep rather than a routed mortise pocket. That makes it a far easier retrofit on an existing bored door than a mortise handleset.
8) Is this Emtek handleset suitable for a commercial building entrance?
Emtek lists the 454515 as residential. It is a made-to-order sandcast bronze entry set aimed at homes and rustic-style residential entries, not a Grade 1 commercial opening. For an office, school, or multi-family common door, you want a commercial-grade cylindrical or mortise lock instead.
9) Is the Emtek 454515 electronic or does it take a smart lock?
No electronics. It is a purely mechanical key-operated entry set with a double cylinder deadbolt, so there is no keypad, motor, or wiring involved and nothing to power at the door.
