1) Will the Emtek 5444 STRETTO narrow trim lockset fit a narrow stile or French door with a 1-1/4 inch bore?
That is exactly what the 5444 is built for. It uses a narrow 1-1/4 inch door prep with 3-3/8 inch center-to-center hole spacing, instead of the 2-1/8 inch bore a standard knob or lever set needs. If your door is already prepped for a conventional 2-1/8 inch cross bore, this plate will not cover it and you want a standard bored lockset instead.
2) Does the Emtek 5444 STRETTO keyed lockset need handing specified?
Handing matters here. Right hand or left hand is a required choice at order, and Emtek calls it out specifically for leversets since a lever has to point the correct way. Stand outside the door: if the hinges are on your right, it is right hand. Get it wrong on a lever and the handle sits upside down.
3) What backset does the Emtek 5444 use, and can I put it on a door already bored at 2-3/4 inches?
Both standard backsets are covered. The latch is adjustable for 2-3/8 inch or 2-3/4 inch, and you specify which one on the order. 2-3/8 is the default; call out 2-3/4 if that is how your door is bored. Measure from the door edge to the center of the bore to confirm.
4) What do I have to specify when ordering the Emtek 5444, and what comes in the box?
It ships as a complete set with the latch and strike plate included. What you choose: finish, handing, backset (2-3/8 or 2-3/4), door thickness band, keying (keyed alike or keyed different), and the interior knob or lever style. The outside is the 1-1/2 x 11 inch rectangular plate; the inside trim is where the design choice happens.
5) Single cylinder entry lockset: does the Emtek 5444 take a key on both sides?
No. The 5444 is a single cylinder entry function, so it is keyed from the outside only and the interior is a knob or lever with a thumbturn-style release, no key. If you have glass within reach of the inside trim and your inspector wants keyed access from inside, single cylinder is the wrong choice.
6) Can I key several Emtek 5444 locksets to the same key across a house or building?
Yes, keyed alike is an order option, so a run of 5444 sets can be set to one key. There is also an optional key code field if you need them cut to a code you already have on site. Order them on the same purchase so they are keyed as a group.
7) What knob and lever styles can I put on the inside of the Emtek 5444?
Twenty five interior trim choices, ten levers and fifteen knobs. Levers: Aurora, Bryce, Cimarron, Cody, Durango, Lariat, Mariposa, Montrose, Teton, Yuma. Knobs include Butte, Egg, Round, Winchester, Bristol, Hampton, Lowell, Windsor, Astoria, Diamond, Georgetown, Modern Disc, Modern Square, Old Town and Providence. Any brass knob or lever in the line can be paired with the 5444 plate, which is how you match it to the rest of the hardware in the house.
8) Is the Emtek 5444 rated for commercial multi-family or office traffic?
It is classed residential. For a single-family entry, a condo unit door, or a high-end remodel it is the right product. For a leasing office lobby, a school, or anything on a heavy-cycle commercial opening, specify a Grade 1 or Grade 2 commercial bored lockset instead.
9) Is the Emtek 5444 a mortise lock or a tubular lock, and how much does the door have to be machined?
Tubular. That means a small cross bore and an edge bore for the latch, not the deep mortise pocket a mortise lock requires. The 1-1/4 inch bore and 28 degree latch are what let it go into a narrow stile where there is not enough rail to cut a mortise. Much less machining than a mortise body, which is the usual reason people choose it on a French or glass door.
10) What finishes does the Emtek 5444 STRETTO rectangular lockset come in?
Three: Flat Black (FB), Medium Bronze (MB), and Tumbled White Bronze (TWB). The body is solid brass, so these are living finishes over brass rather than plated steel, and they will hold up on a front entry that sees weather under an overhang.
