Emtek 8900 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Do I have to bore the door to install the Emtek 8900 dummy kit?
No door prep at all. The 8900 is a surface mount kit, so it screws to the face of the door with no cross bore, no edge bore and no latch mortise. That is what makes it the fast option for a closet or a pantry door that was never drilled, or for a slab you do not want to cut.
2) What is a thru-bore dummy kit actually for, and how is it different from a passage set?
A dummy is a pull only. There is no latch and nothing turns or retracts, so it does nothing to hold the door shut, that job goes to a roller catch, a ball catch or a magnetic catch you supply separately. The 8900 is the non-keyed dummy function kit that mounts an Emtek knob or lever to a door purely as a handle. If you need the door to latch when it closes, you want a passage set instead, not this kit.
3) Does the Emtek 8900 kit come with the knob or lever, or do I order those separately?
The lever or knob and the rosette are specified when the kit is ordered, so pick the design and the rosette style at the same time as the 8900. The kit itself is the mounting hardware; the trim you see on the door is the design you choose alongside it.
4) Is the Emtek 8900 a single dummy or does it put a handle on both sides of the door?
Thru-bore is the clue. The 8900 runs through the door, so it carries trim on both faces from one kit, which is what you want on a double closet door or a pantry where both sides get pulled. A single sided dummy that only dresses one face is a different part.
5) Is the Emtek 8900 dummy kit rated for a commercial opening?
It is a residential kit. The 8900 is built for house and multi-family interior doors, closets, pantries and french door inactive leaves. For a commercial corridor or an institutional facility standardizing on graded hardware, this is not the part to spec.
6) Will the Emtek 8900 match the tubular knobs and levers already on my other doors?
The 8900 is a tubular type kit and takes Emtek lever, knob and rosette designs, so you specify the same design and rosette you already have on the passage and privacy sets in the building and the dummy openings read identically. That is the usual reason to use it: one closet or one inactive french door leaf that needs to look like the rest of the floor without a working latch.
7) What is the Emtek 8900 dummy mounting kit made of?
Brass. That is the base material of the mounting kit itself, which matters on a dummy because the trim is doing nothing but taking a hand pull every day, and brass components hold their thread and fit over that use better than a pot metal substitute.
8) Is the Emtek 8900 an electronic or keyed part?
Neither. The 8900 is a mechanical, non-keyed dummy kit with no cylinder, no keyway and no electronics, so there is nothing to key into a master system and nothing to wire. If you are keying a house alike, this opening simply drops out of the keying schedule.
