B-LINE 1450E-8534 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the B-Line 1450E-8534 photoelectric sensor need a separate reflector, or does it detect directly off the target?
The 1450E-8534 is a retroreflective sensor running in non-polarized retroreflective mode, so it needs a reflector mounted opposite the sensor. The beam leaves the sensor, bounces off the reflector, and returns; anything breaking that path triggers the output. Non-polarized means it reads any return light, so shiny targets like wrapped pallets or stainless carts can reflect enough to fool it. If your target is reflective, a polarized retroreflective or a through-beam pair is the better choice.
2) Can the B-Line 1450E sensor switch a 120V load directly, or do I need an interposing relay?
It switches line voltage directly. The output is an SPDT Form C relay rated 3A at 240 Vac, with maximum AC current of 3A, so a 120V contactor coil, solenoid valve, or small alarm load is within range without an interposing relay. Form C gives you both normally open and normally closed contacts off one common, so you can wire light-operate or dark-operate without changing the sensor. Anything over 3A still needs a pilot relay or contactor.
3) Is the B-Line 1450E-8534 suitable for washdown areas or outdoor use?
It carries IP67 and IP69K ratings, so it handles dust, temporary immersion, and high pressure, high temperature washdown typical of food and beverage plants. The housing is fiberglass reinforced plastic and it operates from -13 to 131 F (-25 to 55 C). That temperature floor means unheated loading docks and cold storage anterooms are fine, but a blast freezer running below -13 F is outside the rating.
4) How does the 1450E-8534 wire in, and do I need to buy a cordset separately?
No separate cordset needed. It ships as a pigtail: a 6 foot PVC cable with a 5 pin dual key micro connector on the end, so you land it into a matching 5 pin micro receptacle or cut the connector off and terminate into a junction box. Five conductors is what the Form C relay needs, common plus NO and NC plus power. If your run is longer than 6 feet, plan on an extension cordset with the same 5 pin dual key micro.
5) How do I tell if a photoelectric sensor is aimed well enough without a meter?
The 1450E-8534 has three LEDs that do it for you: yellow for power on, green for output status, and red for marginal gain. Red lit means the sensor is still seeing the reflector but with little margin, so dirt on the lens, vibration, or a slight shift in alignment will cause nuisance trips. Aim the sensor until the red marginal gain LED drops out, then lock it down. That indicator is the main thing that shortens a commissioning walk on a long conveyor line.
6) Can I keep the output energized briefly after the object clears the beam?
Yes, the 1450E-8534 includes on-board time delay. That lets you hold the relay after the target leaves the beam, which is how you keep a short gap between cartons from chattering a counter or dropping out a door hold-open signal. Without a delay function you would be adding a timer relay in the panel to do the same job.
7) Should I use a retroreflective sensor like this or a through-beam pair?
Retroreflective, which is what the 1450E-8534 is, puts emitter and receiver in one housing and only needs a passive reflector on the far side. That halves the wiring and means one power drop instead of two, which is why it is the usual pick for conveyor rails, overhead door safety edges, and gate applications. Through-beam is the answer when you need longer range, when the target is shiny or transparent enough to confuse a non-polarized retro beam, or when heavy dust is knocking down return signal. The trade is running power and conduit to both sides of the opening.
8) How much room do I need to mount this sensor on a machine frame or conveyor rail?
The body measures 3.46 x 1.91 x 1.81 inches and weighs about .3375 lb, so it fits a standard small rectangular photoeye bracket and does not need structural support. Allow clearance behind it for the 6 foot pigtail exiting the housing plus the bend radius on the PVC cable so you are not straining the connector.
