Thomas & Betts CIEFA-4 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the CIEFA-4 for rigid conduit or for EMT?
Rigid. The CIEFA-4 is specified as a rigid entrance head, so it belongs on threaded rigid metal conduit, not on EMT, which uses a different head style.
2) What is the Thomas & Betts CIEFA-4 made of, and will it hold up outdoors on a service mast?
Cast aluminum. That is the usual choice for a weatherhead sitting at the top of an exposed service riser, since it will not rust the way a plated steel body can where rain runs off the roofline.
3) What does an entrance head like the CIEFA-4 actually do on a service entrance?
It caps the top of the conduit riser and turns the conductors out and downward so rain cannot follow the wire into the raceway. The service drop is spliced to the conductors above the head. The CIEFA-4 is the 4 inch rigid version for service entrance cable work.
4) Do I order anything besides the CIEFA-4 to finish a 4 inch service mast?
The head is the cap only. The 4 inch rigid conduit, the straps or roof flashing, the mast support, and the conductors themselves are all separate line items, and the utility sets the drop connection above the head.
5) Is there more than one version of the Thomas & Betts CIEFA-4 to choose from?
No. It ships as a single model, CIEFA-4, in cast aluminum, with no finish or size options to pick.
