1) What is the Falcon 4188 and where does it go on a vertical rod exit device?
The 4188 is the top strike for Falcon 24/25 Series concealed vertical rod exit devices. It mounts in the head of the frame and is what the top rod's latch engages when the door closes. If a 24/25 Series concealed vertical rod opening is not latching at the head, or the frame is being reused with a new device, the top strike is the piece that receives the rod.
2) Will the Falcon 4188 top strike work on a fire rated exit device opening?
The 4188 covers Falcon 24/25 Series CWDC panic and fire device applications, so it is the correct top strike for both the panic and the fire rated versions of that concealed vertical rod family. On a fire rated opening the top latch has to engage, so replacing a damaged or missing top strike with the manufacturer's own part is the way to keep the assembly as originally built.
3) Does the Falcon 4188 strike fit exit devices other than the Falcon 24/25 Series?
No. The 4188 is built for Falcon 24/25 Series vertical rod devices only. Strike geometry on concealed vertical rod hardware is specific to the rod and latch of its own family, so a Von Duprin, Precision or Yale concealed vertical rod device needs its own manufacturer's top strike. A surface vertical rod device, where the rods are visible on the push side of the door, uses a different top strike and latch arrangement. If you can see the rods, order the surface vertical rod strike for your device instead.
5) Can I replace just the top strike, or do I have to buy a whole new Falcon exit device?
The strike is sold on its own as a service part, so a damaged, worn or missing top strike on a Falcon 24/25 Series concealed vertical rod opening can be swapped without touching the rail, rods or bottom latch. For a mixed fleet, stock the strike that matches each device family rather than looking for one part to cover both.
