Falcon TM581P AVA 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How does the Falcon T581 storeroom function actually work on a door?
The Falcon TM581P is a storeroom lock (ANSI F86): the outside lever is always inoperable, so the door stays locked at all times and is opened from outside by key only. The inside lever is always free for exit, and retracting the deadlocking latchbolt from inside relocks nothing because the outside never unlocks. That makes it the right pick for storage rooms, electrical and mechanical rooms, and any opening you never want left unsecured. If you need the outside lever to stay unlocked during business hours, storeroom is the wrong function.
2) Will the T581 latch into the strike already in my frame?
The standard latch has a 1/2 inch throw with a 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inch square corner faceplate and a 1 inch housing diameter, and it ships with an ANSI 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inch square corner strike with a 1-3/16 inch lip. If your frame already has an ANSI strike cutout, that is a direct drop-in. For wood frames prepped for a T-strike, a 1-1/8 x 2-3/4 inch square corner T-strike (5185) or the radius version (5185-4) can be specified instead, and 1-5/8 x 2-1/4 inch full-lip strikes are offered in square (01-049) and round corner (01-048). A 3/4 inch latch projection is available through our office if your gap is wide.
3) Can the Falcon T Series take my existing Best or Schlage interchangeable cores?
Yes. The Falcon T Series accepts interchangeable cores from Arrow, Best, Corbin Russwin, Medeco Keymark, Medeco 32 Series, Peaks (Kaba), Primus (Schlage), Sargent, Schlage and Yale, which is what lets you fold these locks into a masterkey system you already run. Standard conventional cylinders are 6-pin chambers keyed 5-pin in the Falcon G keyway; IC cores use the A keyway. SFIC (combinated or uncombinated), LFIC, construction cores, and 6- or 7-pin keying are available through our office.
4) What keyway and keying do I have to specify when ordering the T581?
Keyway and keying are both required selections. Keyways are G (standard), C Schlage, E, H, K, L, N and P, plus a None option if you are ordering less cylinder to fit your own core. Keying is keyed different (standard), keyed alike for a group of doors, or to a specific key code you supply. Two nickel silver cut keys come with each lock.
5) Is the Falcon T581 fire rated and does it meet Grade 1?
Yes on both. The lockset is UL Listed for 3 hour A label openings and meets ANSI/BHMA A156.2, Series 4000, Grade 1 for key-in-lever locksets, with an F86 storeroom function designation. That combination is what a spec for a commercial stair or service door normally calls for.
6) What is the closest Grade 2 storeroom lever lock to the Falcon TM581P?
The Falcon TM581P is a Grade 1 storeroom cylindrical lever lock. Two Grade 2 storeroom levers cover the same function at a lighter duty rating: the Hager 2580 Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock with Withnell lever, which fits doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, and the Cal-Royal AG05 Grade 2 storeroom lever lockset with a deadlocking latchbolt, which fits doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. The Falcon TM581P itself is supplied for 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/8 inch doors with a 2-3/4 inch backset, so on a thinner door the Hager or Cal-Royal covers a range the Falcon needs a thin door adapter to reach.
7) I need a Grade 1 lever for a classroom door, not a storeroom door. What should I use instead of the Falcon TM581P?
The Falcon TM581P is storeroom function, where the outside lever is always locked and requires a key. For a classroom opening, the Dexter C1000 Series Grade 1 classroom cylindrical lever lock uses classroom function with a clutching lever and fits doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch; the Dexter C1000 classroom security version is also Grade 1 and covers the same door range when both sides need to be keyed. Cal-Royal also offers the AG03 classroom lever with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway and 2-3/4 inch backset.
8) Can I use the Falcon TM581P on a door that needs to be electrically released?
No. The Falcon TM581P is a non-electronic mechanical storeroom lock. For an electrified cylindrical lever in the same Grade 1 class, the Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 fail safe electrified cylindrical lever lock running on 12VAC/DC and fitting doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch, which is the same door thickness territory as the Falcon's standard range.
9) Is an entrance function lever the same as the Falcon TM581P storeroom lock?
No, and this is the most common mix-up. On the Falcon TM581P the outside lever is permanently inoperable and opens by key only, with no way for an occupant to unlock it from inside. Entrance function levers such as the Hager 2525 Grade 2 commercial cylindrical entry lock for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors, the Cal-Royal AG00 Grade 2 entrance lever with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway and 2-3/8 inch backset, and the Arrow HK11-BB turn-pushbutton entrance lock let the inside side lock and unlock the outside trim. If the opening must never be left unsecured, entrance function is not a substitute.
10) Do I need to order the Falcon T581 handed?
No. The TM581P is non-handed, so one lock covers both left and right hand openings. Useful if you are stocking spares for a building rather than ordering per door.
11) How much door face does the rose cover, and will it hide the old lock's wear ring?
The rose measures 3-1/2 inches in diameter and is heavy wrought brass or bronze over a pressure cast insert, through-bolted through the door. There are no exposed mounting screws on the trim. If you are replacing a knob set with a smaller rose, the 3-1/2 inch diameter is what you have to work with for covering paint shadow or wear marks.
12) Will the outside lever break if someone forces it when locked?
The T Series uses a Pressure Release feature: with the outside lever locked, it is not rigid, it moves freely without retracting the latchbolt. That is what protects the chassis from abuse on a door people yank on. Levers also have individual heavy-duty compression springs behind the rose to stop lever sag, and the springs are stainless steel.
13) I need the same look on passage and classroom doors in the building. What matches a Grade 1 storeroom lever?
Within Grade 1 cylindrical levers, ZenSupply stocks the Corbin Russwin CL3110 passage/closet, which is vandal resistant and fire rated for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors, and the Dexter C1000 Series in classroom, classroom security, asylum and passage functions for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. Those are different manufacturers, so trim styling will not match the Falcon lever exactly. To keep one appearance across a building, stay in the Falcon T Series and change only the function, since all T Series locks share lever styles and the same 3-1/2 inch rose.
14) Does the T581 work in both wood and hollow metal doors, and what screws come with it?
Both. It ships with combination screws that work in wood or metal doors and frames. The chassis is held to the door by threaded mounting nuts, then the preassembled outside trim and inner spindle assembly through-bolt over the chassis with two 10-32 screws; adding the inside rose and lever finishes it. Chassis is brass or cold formed steel, levers are zinc plated and dichromated.
15) What Grade 1 lever should I pair with the Falcon TM581P on doors that do not need to lock?
To keep the same heavy duty class across an opening set, the Grade 1 non-keyed options are the Corbin Russwin CL3110 passage/closet lever, a vandal resistant Grade 1 unit for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors with a fire rating, the Dexter C1000 Series Grade 1 passage lever with a clutching mechanism, and the Design Hardware X75 Grade 1 passage lever for 1-3/4 inch doors. For a non-functioning trim, the BEST 9K Series 1DT single dummy is Grade 1 heavy duty. The Falcon TM581P itself is keyed storeroom function only.
16) We want keyless access on a storage room instead of the Falcon TM581P. What are the options?
The Falcon TM581P is a keyed mechanical lock with a Falcon G keyway as standard. For keyless, the Lockey 2835 mechanical pushbutton keyless lever lock is ADA compliant with passage function and fits doors 1-3/16 inch to 2 inch, the Lockey 2835DC adds a double combination on the same door range, and the Lockey 1150 heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set covers 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch. For an electronic keypad, the Delaney LP250 is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock. Note these are keypad entry devices rather than storeroom-function key locks.
17) What should I specify for a utility or institutional door where the Falcon TM581P storeroom function is not right?
Asylum or institution function keys both sides, so neither lever ever operates free, unlike the Falcon TM581P which leaves the inside lever always free for egress. The Dexter C1000 Series Grade 1 asylum lock carries the F87 ANSI function and fits doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch; the Arrow MK33-BD-CS is a heavy duty asylum lock with a ball knob and a conventional cylinder in the Schlage C keyway. The Falcon TM581P carries ANSI/BHMA function F86.
18) We key everything to Schlage C. Does that rule out the Falcon TM581P?
No. The Falcon TM581P ships standard with the Falcon G keyway but can be ordered in the C Schlage keyway, and the T Series accepts interchangeable cores from Arrow, Best, Corbin Russwin, Medeco, Peaks, Primus, Sargent, Schlage and Yale. If you are matching a Schlage C system at Grade 2, the Cal-Royal AG05 Grade 2 storeroom lever and the Cal-Royal AG03 classroom lever are also built around the 6-pin Schlage C keyway. For Yale hardware already on site, the Accentra 107S is a Schlage cylinder adapter kit.
19) Is a Grade 3 residential lever an acceptable substitute for the Falcon TM581P in an apartment building?
For a commercial-traffic opening, no. The Falcon TM581P is a commercial Grade 1 key-in-lever lock built to ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000 and UL listed for 3 hour A label doors. Grade 3 levers such as the Cal-Royal AUS00 entrance/office lever for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, the Callan Artino entrance leverset, the Master Lock RL Series keyed entry lever and the Kwikset 200BRNL Breton passage lever are built for lighter residential-type duty. They suit unit interior doors rather than a fire rated corridor or storage opening.
20) The opening needs a privacy lever, not a storeroom lock. What replaces the Falcon TM581P?
Privacy function locks from inside with no key cylinder, which the Falcon TM581P does not do since it is keyed storeroom. The Arrow MK02-TA is a privacy cylindrical lock with a Tudor knob, non-keyed, fire rated, for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch. The Hager 2540 is a Grade 2 privacy cylindrical lock with the Withnell lever for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Kwikset 300BRNL Breton is a Grade 3 privacy lever for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors.
21) Can I order the Falcon TM581P as a dummy or inactive lever for a matching inactive leaf?
The Falcon TM581P is a keyed storeroom lever and is not offered as a dummy. For inactive leaves, the BEST 9K Series 1DT single dummy trim is a Grade 1 heavy duty non-keyed lever, the BEST 7KC Series 1DT is the Grade 2 medium duty equivalent, and the Accentra 455LN Augusta is a Grade 1 heavy duty single dummy from the 5400 Series. Decorative options include the Baldwin Estate 5103 half dummy, which is handed left or right.
