GMS Lock-Cylinders IC7-A-26D – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What comes in the box with a GMS 7-pin small format IC core, and what do I have to supply myself?
You get the core shell only. Keys, pins, springs and caps are not included, so this is an un-combinated core meant for a locksmith or a shop with a pinning kit to build up to a keying schedule. If you need a core that arrives keyed and ready to drop in, this is not the part to order.
2) Will a GMS small format interchangeable core fit my Best-style SFIC housing?
Small format interchangeable core is a standard figure-eight core profile, so a GMS 7-pin SFIC seats in any SFIC-prepped housing built for that figure-eight format, the same prep Best-style hardware uses. Pin the core to your own system and it drops into the mortise cylinder housing, rim housing, knob or lever core hole you already have. Note it is a 7-pin core, so your key sections and pinning kit need to be 7-pin.
3) Can I get a GMS SFIC core that works with my existing Schlage C keys?
Yes. The keyway profile on these GMS cores is Schlage C, so keys cut on Schlage C blanks operate them once the core is pinned to your bitting. That makes it a practical way to extend an existing Schlage C system onto openings that use interchangeable core hardware.
4) Which keyway do I pick when ordering a GMS 7-pin SFIC core?
There are 23 keyway sections to choose from: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, J, K, L, M, Q, R, plus 1C and 1D, and the TB, TD, TE, WB, WC and WG and WH sections. Pick the section that matches the blanks and the masterkey system you already run. If you are starting fresh and have no system to match, the section only has to be consistent across the cores you are ordering.
5) Is a 7-pin SFIC core the right choice, or should I use a conventional cylinder?
Interchangeable core is the right call when you expect to rekey often or turn over tenants and staff: pull the core with a control key and swap it in seconds, no disassembly of the lock. A conventional cylinder has to come out of the lock and be repinned on the bench. If your building has no SFIC prep on the hardware, an interchangeable core has nowhere to go and you want a conventional cylinder instead. GMS classifies this core as conventional pinning inside a small format IC body, so it pins like a standard pin tumbler once it is apart.
6) I manage an apartment building and want to standardize rekeying across all the doors. Are these GMS cores a good fit?
They work well for that if the locks are already SFIC prepped. Order every core in the same keyway section, pin them to one masterkey system, and any door can be rekeyed at turnover by swapping a core rather than calling a locksmith to the lock. The catch is that these ship un-combinated with no pins, springs, caps or keys, so you need a locksmith or an in-house shop to pin them before they are usable.
7) Does a 7-pin GMS SFIC core work in the same housing as a 6-pin core?
Yes, the housing is the same. Six and seven pin small format cores share the identical figure-eight body, so both seat in the same SFIC prep. The difference is internal: a 7-pin core takes 7-pin key blanks and 7-pin bitting, which gives more usable combinations for a large masterkey system. Mixing 6 and 7 pin cores in one system is a keying decision, not a fit problem.
8) Do I need a control key for a GMS interchangeable core, and does it come with one?
A control key is what pulls the core out of the housing, and it is separate from the operating key. No keys of any kind ship with this core, control key included. The control bitting gets cut when the core is pinned, so decide the control key with whoever pins the system, and keep it consistent across every core in the building or you will need a different control key per door.
9) What is the GMS PR11 and is it the same thing as the IC7 core?
PR11 is the GMS model designation carried on this 7-pin small format IC core, so the two names refer to the same part. If a supplier quote or a submittal lists PR11, that is the un-combinated SFIC core, not a complete cylinder assembly.
