1) What pipe diameters will the Klein SHBKIT strap wrenches grip?
Two wrenches in the kit cover different ranges. The 6-inch S6HB grips 1.5 to 4 inches OD (3.8 to 10.2 cm), and the 12-inch S12HB grips 1.5 to 5 inches OD (3.8 to 12.7 cm). Both start at 1-1/2 inches, so the shorter handle is the one to reach for in tight quarters and the longer one is what you need above 4 inches.
2) Will a strap wrench mar chrome or plastic pipe the way a pipe wrench does?
No. The Grip-It strap is urethane-coated nylon rather than serrated steel jaws, and under normal conditions it won't scratch, damage or deform polished pipe and fittings, plastic pipe and fittings, oil and water filters, glass pipe, PVC conduit, or polished shafts. That is the reason to choose a strap wrench over a pipe wrench on finished trim, chrome traps, and PVC conduit.
3) Is the Klein SHBKIT a two-piece kit, and which sizes come in it?
It ships as a 2-piece set: the S6HB with a 6-inch handle and the S12HB with a 12-inch handle. Order the SHBKIT part number and you get both, so there is nothing to add for the two capacity ranges.
4) Can I use a cheater bar on the handle for more torque on a stuck filter?
No. Klein's instructions are explicit: do not extend the handle length, and do not push or hammer the wrench. The cam-action design is what builds torque, applying it uniformly as you pull, and the aluminum die cast I-beam handle is not meant to be lengthened. Wear approved eye protection when you're leaning on it.
5) How much strap length do I have to wrap around a large-diameter part?
The 6-inch wrench carries a 21.25-inch strap (54 cm) that is 0.63 inch wide, and the 12-inch wrench a 22.25-inch strap (57 cm) at 1 inch wide. Both are fully adjustable, so you take up only the length the part needs. The wider strap on the 12-inch spreads the load over more surface, which helps on thin-wall plastic.
6) Is this only for plumbing, or will it work on automotive and shop jobs?
