1) Will the Hager 45PT trim work on a vertical rod exit device?
No. The 45PT classroom trim is built for the Hager 4500 rim exit device only, and Hager states outright it is not for use with vertical rod devices. If you're trimming a surface or concealed vertical rod opening, you need the trim specified for that device family, not this one. Put it on a 4500 rim device and the thumbpiece retracts the rim latch the way it should; put it on a vertical rod device and the prep and actuation don't line up.
2) Does the Hager 45PT classroom trim come with a cylinder?
No cylinder is included. The 45PT takes a Hager 3902 mortise cylinder in either 1-1/8 inch or 1-3/8 inch length with a standard cam, ordered separately. Budget for it on every opening, and if you're keying a school into an existing master system, get the cylinders keyed to that system rather than keyed alike out of the box. Without the cylinder the key side of the classroom function does nothing.
3) What does the classroom function on the Hager 45PT actually do during a lockdown?
Function 05: the key locks or unlocks the thumbpiece, and this version adds an auxiliary thumbturn so the room can be secured from the inside without anyone stepping into the corridor with a key. When the thumbpiece is locked, outside entry is blocked; the exit device inside always allows free egress. That inside-secure capability is why this trim gets specified for classrooms and offices rather than a plain key-in-thumbpiece trim.
4) Will the Hager 45PT fit a 1-3/8 inch door?
No. The 45PT is a single-thickness trim rated for 1-3/4 inch doors, which is the standard commercial thickness. On a thinner 1-3/8 inch door the through-bolt lengths and cylinder engagement won't be right. Confirm the leaf is a true 1-3/4 before ordering, particularly on older interior openings in a school where 1-3/8 inch doors are still common.
5) Do I need to order the Hager 45PT handed?
Non-handed. One 45PT covers left and right hand openings, so a property manager or school district stocking spares only needs one part number on the shelf. Handing is set by the 4500 rim device and the door itself, not by the trim.
