1) What's the difference between the E27ICAT, E27RICAT and H27ICAT versions of the HALO 6 inch IC Air-Tite housing?
They're the same 6 inch IC Air-Tite housing built for different install conditions. The E27ICAT is the new construction shallow ceiling version, which mounts to joists before the drywall goes up. The E27RICAT is the remodel shallow ceiling version, meant to go into a ceiling that's already finished by cutting the hole and clipping into the drywall. The H27ICAT is the master new construction shallow ceiling version. Pick new construction when the ceiling is open, remodel when it isn't.
2) Can I bury this HALO recessed housing directly in attic insulation?
Yes. The 6 inch HALO housing is IC rated and Air-Tite, so insulation can sit in direct contact with the can without a standoff or a clearance box around it. The air-tight construction also limits conditioned air leaking up into the attic through the fixture opening, which is what gets flagged on blower-door testing in newer builds.
3) Does the HALO 6 inch IC Air-Tite housing come with a trim and a bulb?
No. The housing is the can, the socket and the junction box only. Lamps are not included, and it accepts halogen, incandescent, LED and CFL. You'll need to order a 6 inch trim separately as well, since the trim is what you actually see in the ceiling and what sets the look (baffle, reflector, eyeball, shower trim).
4) Can I use this HALO housing in a covered exterior soffit or a bathroom shower?
Indoor only. The housing is rated for indoor installation locations, so it shouldn't go in a soffit, a porch ceiling or any damp or wet location. For a shower or a covered exterior run you want a housing carrying a damp or wet location listing, paired with the matching wet location shower trim.
5) I have limited ceiling depth above the drywall. Will a 6 inch HALO can fit?
All three versions of this HALO housing are the shallow ceiling build, which is what you order when joist depth or ductwork above the ceiling won't take a full depth can. That covers the new construction, remodel and master new construction options alike, so the shallow profile isn't something you have to specify separately.
6) I'm adding cans to a finished ceiling with insulation above. Which HALO version do I order?
The remodel shallow ceiling version, MPN E27RICAT. It's built to go in from below through a cut hole in existing drywall, and because it's IC Air-Tite you can install it where the existing insulation sits against the housing. The new construction versions need access from above with the ceiling open, so they're the wrong call on a retrofit.
7) Will this HALO housing work on a standard 120V circuit, or do I need a transformer?
Straight to line voltage, no transformer needed. It's rated 120V and wires directly to a standard branch circuit. Low voltage recessed cans are the ones that require a transformer or remote power supply; this isn't one of those.
8) I'm relamping a building with halogen cans. Can I switch to LED without changing the HALO housing?
Yes. The 6 inch housing takes halogen, incandescent, LED and CFL lamps, so a property manager can move a whole floor from halogen to LED lamps or LED retrofit modules in the same cans without pulling the housings out of the ceiling. That keeps the ceiling intact and the change stays a lamp swap rather than a demo job.
