Halo OT403P – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will a HALO OT403P trim ring cover an oversized or damaged ceiling cutout around a 6-inch recessed can?
That is what the OT403P is for. It's a plastic oversize ring with a 6 inch inner diameter and an 8 inch outer diameter, so it sits over the existing 6 inch opening and hides roughly an inch of ceiling all the way around the hole. Handy when a previous fixture left a ragged cut, when paint or texture stops short of the trim, or when you swap a larger housing for a 6 inch one. It's a cosmetic ring, not a housing or a trim with a reflector, so you still need the fixture trim itself.
2) Can the HALO 6-inch oversize trim ring be used on a covered porch or soffit?
Yes, the ring is rated for indoor and outdoor installation locations, so soffits, covered porches and breezeways are in scope as long as the recessed housing behind it is itself an outdoor-rated fixture. The ring doesn't add any weather rating to the can; it only finishes the ceiling opening.
3) Is the HALO 6-inch oversize trim ring ARRA compliant for a federally funded job?
Yes, HALO lists the OT403P as ARRA compliant, which is the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act domestic sourcing requirement that comes up on federally funded work. If your project spec calls for ARRA compliant material, this ring qualifies on that line.
4) How does the HALO OT403P oversize ring attach to the ceiling, and do I need extra hardware?
It's a recessed-mount ring: it goes up against the ceiling around the opening and is captured when the fixture trim is installed into the housing, so the trim's own springs or torsion clips hold the assembly tight. No separate screws or anchors ship with the ring and none are needed for the normal install. Plan on removing the existing trim, slipping the ring on, and reinstalling the trim.
5) What color is the HALO OT403P oversize ring, and can it be painted to match a ceiling?
It comes in white plastic, one finish only. White is the usual match for a flat white ceiling, and because the body is plastic rather than metal it takes a light coat of latex without the adhesion trouble bare aluminum gives. Nothing in HALO's spec calls out a factory-applied paintable primer, so if you're color matching a tinted ceiling, prep and test on one ring before you do a floor.
6) Does the HALO OT403P work with 120V line voltage recessed cans?
The ring carries a 120V rating, which covers standard line voltage residential and commercial recessed housings. It carries no current itself, it is a plastic ceiling ring, so the rating is really about the fixture family it belongs to rather than any wiring you do to the ring.
7) If I'm standardizing recessed lighting across a building, how many HALO oversize rings do I need per fixture?
One ring per 6 inch fixture opening. Each OT403P covers a single can, and the size offered is 6 inch, so a floor with forty 6 inch downlights takes forty rings. That's a common property-manager buy after a ceiling repaint or a housing swap leaves a visible ring of old paint or unfinished drywall around each opening.
