The SDS788 has an SDS-Plus shank, so it drops into any SDS-Plus rotary hammer without a chuck key. It will not fit an SDS-Max or spline-drive hammer, and it is not meant for a standard three-jaw keyed or keyless drill chuck. If your hammer takes the larger SDS-Max shank you need a different bit.
2) Can I use the SDS788 for drilling steel or wood?
No. It is a hammer drill bit with an SDS-Plus shank, built for percussive drilling in masonry and concrete. Running it in steel or wood will not cut properly and wrecks the carbide tip. Use a twist bit for steel and an auger or spade bit for wood.
