1) Will a 6 inch hanger bolt be too long for a 2x wood joist?
At 6 inches overall, the HAB12B is built for deep embedment plus a length of exposed machine thread. Roughly half the bolt is screw thread going into the wood, so on nominal 2x framing (1-1/2 inch actual) you will bottom out or pass through before the screw thread is fully buried. Use this length where you are anchoring into a heavy timber, glulam, doubled blocking or a laminated beam, or where you need extra stand-off below the structure for the nut and hanger fitting. For thin framing, choose a shorter hanger bolt.
2) How many hanger bolts come in a box of Metallics HAB12B?

A hanger bolt has a lag or wood screw thread on one end and a machine thread on the other. You drive the screw end into a wood joist, beam or blocking, leaving the 3/8-16 machine thread exposed to take a nut, rod coupling or hanger fitting. That is how you get a threaded 3/8 inch attachment point in wood structure without drilling through and using a through bolt. Common on conduit and cable tray hangers, pipe clevis hangers, strut and light fixture support.
5) Do I need anything else to hang threaded rod from a Metallics HAB12B?
The box contains the bolts only. To complete the hang you supply the mating hardware for the 3/8-16 end: a 3/8-16 rod coupling if you are extending down with all thread rod, or a 3/8-16 hex nut and washer if you are fastening a hanger, strap or strut fitting directly to the exposed thread. A pilot hole in the wood sized for the screw thread is normal practice before driving.
