1) Can I use Sta Put Ultra plumbers putty on a granite or quartz countertop without staining it?
Yes. Sta Put Ultra is an oil-free, non-staining polymer sealant, which is why it can go on porous surfaces that regular oil-based putty would leave a dark halo on: granite, marble, quartz, sandstone, Corian, plastics, rubber and fiberglass, plus grout and manufactured sinks, shower bases and countertops. That is the whole reason to reach for this over standard putty on a stone vanity or an engineered-stone kitchen top.
2) Is Oatey Sta Put Ultra safe on ABS drain fittings?
No. Sta Put Ultra is not for use on ABS. If you are bedding a basket strainer or a pop-up flange into an ABS tailpiece or ABS shower drain body, use a different sealing method for that joint. On the sink or countertop side of the same job the putty is fine, it is the ABS plastic contact that is excluded.
3) Should I use plumbers putty or silicone to set a sink strainer on a stone top?
Putty is the choice when you want the joint to stay serviceable. Sta Put Ultra stays permanently soft, malleable and flexible, so a strainer or pop-up bedded in it can be backed out later without cutting or scraping cured sealant off the stone. Silicone bonds and has to be destroyed to service the fitting. Where putty normally loses out on stone is staining, and this is an oil-free formula, so that objection is off the table.
4) Does Sta Put Ultra handle like normal plumbers putty, or does it need mixing or cure time?
It rolls and works in the hand exactly like conventional plumbers putty, no mixing and no set-up window to work around. It is clean to handle and sets quickly, so you can bed the fitting, snug the nut, and wipe the squeeze-out in one pass.
5) Is Oatey 25171 putty okay to use in an occupied apartment or a hospital restroom?
It is odorless and non-toxic, so there is no solvent smell to clear out of an occupied unit and no ventilation staging required. That matters on turns in multi-family, healthcare and hospitality work where you are setting lavatory drains with people in the building.
6) What color is Sta Put Ultra putty, and will it show at the flange?
Beige. Any squeeze-out around a strainer or pop-up flange wipes off, so the color only matters if the joint is left visible; against a white or stainless sink a beige bead reads as an off-white line rather than the grey of traditional putty.
