OATEY O60447 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I use Oatey Hercules 60447 primer on ABS pipe?
No. The Hercules Unpurple primer is for PVC and CPVC pipe and fittings only, and Oatey specifically does not recommend it for ABS installations. For an ABS drain job you need an ABS cement or an ABS/PVC transition cement instead.
2) Will a clear primer pass inspection where the code requires primer on PVC joints?
That is the point of the Unpurple formula. It goes on clear so it leaves no purple staining on finished or exposed pipe, but it fluoresces purple under UV light so an inspector can verify the joint was primed. It also meets ASTM F656, which is the primer standard most jurisdictions reference. Check with your local inspector first, since some AHJs still insist on visibly purple primer.
3) Is this primer approved for potable water lines?
The Hercules Unpurple primer complies with NSF/ANSI 61 health effects requirements, which is the standard that governs materials in contact with drinking water. It's also certified to UL Greenguard Gold for low chemical emissions, which matters on occupied-building and school work.
4) Does primer alone glue the joint, or do I still need PVC cement?
Primer alone will not make the joint. The Hercules Unpurple primer is a primer-cleaner: it strips surface dirt, grease and grime and pre-softens the pipe and fitting so the solvent cement can fuse them. You still have to apply a PVC or CPVC solvent cement over the primed surfaces while they are wet to complete the weld.
5) What temperature can I solvent weld with Oatey 60447 primer?
Recommended application range is 40 to 110 degrees F (4 to 43 degrees C). The can itself is rated down to -15 degrees F / -26 degrees C on the low end of its application data, but for a sound weld work within the recommended 40 to 110 degree window, and give the primer and cement longer to set at the cold end of it.
6) Is this low-VOC primer legal to use in California air districts?
Yes. It's a low-VOC formulation that meets South Coast AQMD Rule 1168/316A and BAAQMD Method 40 requirements, so it's usable on jobs in those districts. That also makes it the safer stock item for a multi-state contractor who doesn't want two different cans on the truck.
