1) Does Oatey Hercules Unpurple primer meet low-VOC rules in California?
It does. This low-VOC primer meets South Coast AQMD Rule 1168/316A and BAAQMD Method 40 requirements, so it is usable on jobs in those California air districts. All Hercules solvent cement and primer products are also certified to UL Greenguard Gold.
2) Will a clear primer pass inspection where purple primer is required?
Hercules Unpurple primer goes on clear but shows purple under UV light, so an inspector can verify that primer was applied without purple staining on finished fixtures and exposed pipe. It meets ASTM F656, which is the standard most codes reference for PVC/CPVC primers. If your local inspector specifically requires visible purple in daylight, use a standard purple primer instead.
3) Can I use this primer on potable water lines?
Yes. The 60445 primer complies with NSF/ANSI 61 health effects requirements, so it is suitable for potable water PVC and CPVC systems as well as DWV work.
4) What temperature can I apply Oatey Hercules Unpurple primer at in cold weather?
The recommended application range printed on the product is 40F to 110F (4C to 43C). The spec data carries a wider stated application range down to -15F (-26C) and up to 110F (43C). For a reliable weld in winter, work at the recommended 40F and above, keep the can and the pipe warm, and allow extra set time.
5) Is primer actually necessary before PVC cement, or can I skip it?
Primer does two things cement cannot: it removes surface dirt, grease and grime, and it pre-softens the pipe so the solvent weld bonds fast and tight. Most plumbing codes require a listed primer on PVC and CPVC pressure joints. Skipping it is the usual cause of a joint that looks glued but leaks under pressure.
