OATEY 60415 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use Oatey Hercules purple primer on ABS pipe?
No. The Hercules 60415 purple primer is made for PVC and CPVC pipe and fittings only, and Oatey does not recommend it for ABS installations. For ABS drain, waste and vent work you need an ABS-specific cement (ABS is normally solvent welded with black ABS cement and no primer).
2) Does purple primer satisfy an inspector who wants to see that primer was used?
That is exactly what the purple tint is for. The 60415 primer leaves a visible purple mark on the pipe and fitting socket, so an inspector can confirm the joint was primed where plumbing code requires primer verification. If the job is exposed finish work where a purple ring is unacceptable, a clear primer is the better choice.
3) Can I prime PVC in hot weather, and how hot is too hot?
Application is rated up to 110 F (43 C), which covers most summer work. Above that, stage the material in the shade and prime and cement in smaller sections, because primer flashes off fast in heat and the joint has to be cemented while the surface is still softened.
4) Does purple primer replace cleaning the pipe before gluing?
It does both jobs. The Hercules primer removes surface dirt, grease and grime while pre-softening the pipe surface, which is what lets the solvent cement fuse the joint. Cut and deburr the pipe, prime the pipe end and the fitting socket, then cement while the surface is still wet and soft.
5) Is Oatey Hercules 60415 primer suitable for DWV drain lines as well as pressure pipe?
The 60415 primer is specified for DWV pipe applications and covers PVC and CPVC pipe and fittings generally, so it works for drain, waste and vent as well as CPVC water lines. Pair it with the solvent cement rated for the system you are welding: PVC cement for DWV and PVC pressure, CPVC cement for CPVC water distribution.
6) How much does a 16 oz can of this primer weigh for shipping and shelf stocking?
The 16 oz Hercules purple primer can weighs 1.125 lb and holds 0.037 cubic feet of volume, which is useful if you are stocking a van shelf or a flammables cabinet by weight. It is a solvent primer, so store it upright with the lid tight and away from ignition sources.
