1) What size PVC pipe can Oatey Hercules 60013 medium body cement handle?
The Hercules 60013 clear cement works on all schedules and classes of PVC pipe and fittings up to 8 inch diameter with interference fit. The medium viscosity is what buys you that range, it fills gaps on larger fittings where a thin regular-body cement would starve the joint.
2) Can I use this cement on a potable water line?
Yes. Oatey Hercules 60013 complies with NSF/ANSI 61 health effects requirements and is listed for potable water, pressure pipe, conduit and DWV applications. It also meets ASTM D2564, which is the standard spec inspectors cite for PVC solvent cement.
3) How cold can it be before PVC cement stops working on a jobsite?
Recommended application range for the Hercules 60013 cement is 40 to 110 degrees F (4 to 43 degrees C). Below 40 F the solvent flashes too slowly and cure is unreliable, so for cold weather work you want a cement specifically rated for low temperature rather than this one.
4) Can I use Oatey 60013 on ABS or CPVC pipe?
No. This is a PVC-only solvent cement. ABS drain pipe needs ABS cement, CPVC needs a CPVC-rated cement, and a PVC-to-ABS transition needs a transition cement or a mechanical coupling. Using the wrong solvent on ABS or CPVC gives you a joint that will not hold.
5) What is the maximum service temperature of a joint made with Hercules 60013?
Maximum use temperature is 60 degrees C (140 F). That covers normal DWV and cold/hot domestic water within PVC's own limits, but it rules out anything running hotter, where you would be on CPVC and a CPVC-specific cement instead.
6) Is medium body cement the right choice, or should I use regular body?
Medium body is the general purpose pick for PVC up to 8 inch. Its viscosity fills gaps in loose interference fits and gives you more working time, which matters on larger fittings and on multi-joint assemblies you are dry-fitting fast. Regular or thin body is better on small diameter pipe where you want quicker set and less excess pushed into the bore.
7) Will clear PVC cement pass inspection, or do inspectors want purple?
The purple color inspectors look for comes from primer, not the cement. The 60013 is a clear cement, so it leaves a clean joint on exposed or finish work; if your jurisdiction requires visible evidence of priming, use a purple primer under it.
