1) What size PVC pipe can Oatey 31018 medium body cement be used on?
Oatey 31018 clear PVC cement handles all schedules and classes of PVC pipe and fittings up to 6 inch diameter with an interference fit. Above 6 inch, or on loose-fit joints, you move up to a heavy body cement instead.
2) Can I use Oatey 31018 cement on potable water lines?
Yes. The 31018 cement is approved for DWV, pressure pipe, potable water and electrical applications, and it complies with NSF/ANSI 61 health effects requirements. It also meets ASTM D2564, the standard spec for PVC solvent cement that inspectors look for on a plumbing rough-in.

5) Should I use medium body or heavy body PVC cement?
Medium body, like the Oatey 31018, is the general choice for pipe up to 6 inch with a snug interference fit, and it has good gap filling for joints that are not perfectly tight. Heavy body is for larger diameters and sloppier fits where you need the cement to stay put and bridge more gap. Regular body is thinner and better suited to small diameter, tight-fit fittings.
6) Will clear PVC cement pass inspection, or does the inspector want purple?
The cement itself is clear, so it leaves no color on the joint. Many jurisdictions want visible evidence of primer, which is why purple primer is used alongside clear cement rather than a tinted cement. Oatey 31018 is a cement only, not a primer, so order primer separately if your code requires it.
7) Can Oatey 31018 be used on CPVC or ABS pipe?
No. It is formulated for PVC pipe and fittings only. CPVC needs a CPVC-specific cement, ABS needs ABS cement, and PVC-to-ABS transitions require a transition cement.
8) How much cement is in the can and how far does an 8 oz size go?
