HES 2001-1 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What does the HES 2001-1 bridge rectifier actually do in an electric strike circuit?
The HES 2001-1 converts AC to unfiltered DC, so an electric strike that needs DC can be run from an existing AC supply. It is rated 35 V, 2 Amp. Wiring it in also stops the AC buzz you get from an AC-powered strike, since the coil sees rectified DC instead.
2) What is the difference between the HES 2001-1 and the 2001M rectifier?
Both convert AC to unfiltered DC and neither is recommended for the 1006 strike. The 2001-1 is rated 35 V, 2 Amp with no added protection. The 2001M is rated 35 V, 1 Amp but includes an MOV and a self-resettable fuse. Pick the 2001-1 when you need the higher current capacity; pick the 2001M when you want the surge and overcurrent protection built in.
3) I need a rectifier for a HES 1006 electric strike - is the 2001-1 the right accessory?
The 2001-1 is not recommended for the 1006 electric strike, and neither is the 2001M. For the 1006 the input voltage must be DC, and the HES 2005M3 is the accessory specified for use with it. Confirm your supply is DC before wiring a 1006.
4) Can I use a transformer like the Adams Rite 4605 instead of a bridge rectifier to run a DC electric strike?
No, they do different jobs. The Adams Rite 4605 is a 115 VAC to 12/24 VAC transformer with 40 volt-amp output, so its output is still AC. The HES 2001-1 is a wire-in bridge rectifier that converts AC to unfiltered DC, rated 35 V, 2 Amp. If your source is 115 VAC line voltage you need the transformer to step it down; if your strike or device requires DC from an existing AC supply, the 2001-1 is the part that does the conversion. The two are often used together rather than in place of one another.
5) Will one HES 2001-1 handle the current draw of my strike?
The 2001-1 is rated to 2 Amps at up to 35 V, so add up the continuous and inrush draw of whatever you are feeding and keep it under that. If your strike list exceeds 2 A, the 2001-1 is the wrong part and you need to split the load or feed DC from the supply directly.
6) What other HES accessories go with an electric strike install besides the rectifier?
Depending on the job: the 2004M adapts existing HES strikes to ElectroLynx connectors, the 2006M gives an audible operation indicator at 24VDC (75db at 11-3/4 inches), the 2007M comes with 4 inch wire leads, the SMB is a surface mounting box, and the HESCUT-MTK metal template kit covers 1006, 1500, 1600, 4500, 5000, 5200, 7000 and 7501 strikes in 4-7/8 inch ANSI jamb preps. The 157 Torx screws and 157D tamper-resistant Torx R20 insert bit handle the fasteners.
7) Is the HES 2004M an alternative to the 2001-1?
No. The 2004M is an adapter between existing HES electric strikes and ElectroLynx connectors - it changes how the strike is connected, not the form of the power. The 2001-1 is a wire-in bridge rectifier that converts AC to unfiltered DC at 35 V, 2 Amp. If your problem is an AC supply feeding a DC strike, the 2004M will not solve it.
8) We want an audible cue when the strike releases - does the 2001-1 do that, or do we need a different part?
The 2001-1 is strictly a power conversion device and produces no sound. For an audible cue at the opening, the HES 2006M gives an audible operation indicator at 24VDC, 75db at 11-3/4 inches. If you need a louder standalone sounder for egress alarm duty, the RCI 914 Series delayed egress sounder offers field-selectable volume output up to 102dB, and the Adams Rite 29-0218 is a piezo electric horn with multi-voltage compatibility. Those are alarm annunciators rather than strike accessories, so match the function to what the opening actually calls for.
9) Is a Locknetics RDB4 relay board a substitute for the 2001-1 in an access control cabinet?
No. The Locknetics RDB4 is a 4 output relay distribution board, used to switch and distribute outputs to multiple devices. The HES 2001-1 is a wire-in bridge rectifier rated 35 V, 2 Amp that converts AC to unfiltered DC. A relay board does not rectify, so if a strike on the board is being fed AC and needs DC, you still need the rectifier in that leg.
10) My problem is getting power across the door rather than converting it - what should I be looking at instead of the 2001-1?
The 2001-1 stays in the power path and handles AC to DC conversion only. To carry current from the frame into the door leaf, the RCI 9500/9501 Series mortise pin transfer is the tamper-resistant transfer device, rated 1.5A at 24VAC. The HES 2007M is a version with 4 inch wire leads if your need is simply a shorter pigtail connection at the strike.
11) Is the HES 2001-1 rectifier suitable for commercial openings, and how many come in a pack?
It is a commercial-duty access control part, Grade 1, and it ships one per package. Order one per circuit you are converting.
12) Does the HES 2001-1 need a box or enclosure, or does it wire in loose?
It is a wire-in component, so it lands inside the jamb, junction box or power supply enclosure you are already using. If you need a housing at the strike itself, the HES SMB surface mounting box is the accessory for that.
