HES 2001M – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the current rating on the HES 2001M, and is it enough for my strike?
The 2001M is rated 35 V, 1 amp. It converts AC to unfiltered DC. If the strike you are powering draws more than 1 amp inrush or holding current, step up to the HES 2001-1, which is the same conversion at 35 V, 2 amp.
2) Which HES accessory should be used with a 1006 electric strike instead of the 2001M rectifier?
The 2001M is not recommended for the 1006 electric strike. For the 1006 the input voltage must be DC, and the 2005M3 is the accessory made for use with that strike. If the opening is a 1006 fed from an AC source, the fix is a DC supply and the 2005M3 rather than a plug-in bridge rectifier.
3) What is the difference between the HES 2001M and the HES 2001-1 bridge rectifier?
Both convert AC to unfiltered DC at 35 V, and neither is recommended for the 1006 electric strike. The 2001M is rated 35 V, 1 amp and ships with an MOV and a self-resettable fuse in the kit. The 2001-1 is rated 35 V, 2 amp. Size the rectifier to the current draw of the strike and any devices sharing the circuit: a 2 amp part covers a heavier load, while the 2001M adds transient suppression and overcurrent protection to a 1 amp circuit.
4) Can an Adams Rite 4605 transformer be used in place of the HES 2001M?
They do different jobs in the same circuit. The Adams Rite 4605 is a regular transformer stepping 115 VAC down to 12/24 VAC with a 40 volt-amp output, so its output is still alternating current. The HES 2001M converts AC to unfiltered DC at 35 V, 1 amp. A transformer sets the voltage; the rectifier changes it to DC for a strike that requires DC. On an AC-fed opening the two are commonly used together, not interchangeably.
5) Why would I put a rectifier on an electric strike instead of just wiring it to AC?
Two reasons a locksmith hits on the job. AC on a strike coil buzzes, so if the opening needs quiet operation you run it on DC. And a lot of HES strike models are dual voltage but behave differently on AC than DC. The 2001M plugs in ahead of the strike and converts the AC supply to unfiltered DC at up to 35 V and 1 amp, so you can feed a DC strike from an existing AC transformer without replacing the power supply.
6) Does the HES 2001M include surge protection, or do I need to add an MOV separately?
Surge protection is already in it. The 2001M ships with an MOV and a self-resettable fuse, so you are not adding a separate diode or varistor across the coil. The self-resetting fuse means an overcurrent event does not leave you replacing a part inside the frame.
7) I need to convert AC to DC for my access control power, is a rectifier the right part or do I need a transformer?
Depends what you are fixing. A rectifier changes AC to DC but does not change the voltage, so use the 2001M when you already have the right AC voltage at the opening and the strike wants DC. If your problem is voltage, that is a transformer job. The Adams Rite 4605 takes 115 VAC down to 12 or 24 VAC with a 40 volt-amp output. Some jobs take both, transformer first for the voltage, then the rectifier at the strike.
8) What else do I need to order to finish an HES electric strike install besides the rectifier?
Depends what the opening is missing. For cutting the jamb, the HES HESCUT-MTK metal template kit covers the 1006, 1500, 1600, 4500, 5000, 5200, 7000 and 7501 in 4-7/8 inch ANSI jamb preps, and the HES 9000-MTK covers the 9000 family. If the frame will not take a mortised strike, the HES SMB surface mounting box mounts it on the face. Tamper-resistant Torx screws are the HES 157, with the R20 insert bit sold as the 157D. For a connectorized job, the HES 2004M adapts existing HES strikes to ElectroLynx connectors.
9) I have Folger Adam 300 Series strikes in the building, is the HES 2001M the right rectifier for those?
Yes for the 310 family. The 2001M is listed for the Folger Adam 310, 310-1(X), 310-4, 310-4-X and 310-6-X, as well as the 700 and 742. If you are also replacing the faceplate on a Folger Adam 300 Series strike, the HES 310-2-3 is the plate for it in standard 630 finish, Torx screws included.
10) Is a Locknetics RDB4 relay distribution board an alternative to an HES 2001M rectifier?
No. The Locknetics RDB4 is a 4 output relay distribution board, supplied as a board only, used to switch and distribute outputs to devices. The HES 2001M is a plug-in bridge rectifier that converts AC to unfiltered DC, rated 35 V, 1 amp, with an MOV and self-resettable fuse. Switching an output does not change AC to DC, so a strike needing DC still requires the rectifier ahead of it.
11) How do the HES 2004M, 2006M and 2007M accessories differ from the 2001M?
They address different parts of the installation. The 2001M is the plug-in bridge rectifier, converting AC to unfiltered DC at 35 V, 1 amp. The 2004M is an adapter between existing HES electric strikes and ElectroLynx connectors. The 2006M provides an audible operation indicator at 24VDC, 75db at 11-3/4 inches. The 2007M comes with 4 inch wire leads. If the problem is that the strike needs DC from an AC source, the 2001M is the part; the others do not perform conversion.
12) Is the 2001M ordered under any other part number?
HES catalogues the plug-in bridge rectifier as model 2001M, and it also appears under the alternate part number 131046. HES is an ASSA ABLOY brand, so you may see it referenced that way on a spec or a purchase order.
13) Is the HES 2001M rectifier rated for commercial door openings?
Yes. The 2001M is a commercial Grade 1 electronic access control component, sold one per package. It is a wiring accessory that plugs into the strike circuit, not a device that mounts in the door or frame.
14) Will the 2001M rectifier tell me when the strike has released?
No, the 2001M has no indicator, it only converts power. If you want an audible confirmation at the door, the HES 2006M gives an audible operation indicator at 24VDC, 75db measured at 11-3/4 inches. The two are separate accessories and can be used on the same opening.
