HES HES-KS200-S-IPS-B – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What's the difference between the HES KS200 and the KS210?
Communication protocol. The KS200 talks Wiegand over hard wire; the KS210 uses RS-485 OSDP. Pick based on what your access control panel accepts. One more thing decides it: Bluetooth for HID Mobile Access is only available on KS210 models. If you want technicians opening racks with a phone credential over Bluetooth, the KS200 won't do it, though the KS200 is still HID NFC Mobile Access enabled.
2) Which card reader do I order on the HES KS200 for a federal PIV-I credential?
Card reader is the first thing you specify, and there are five choices. HID multiCLASS SE handles standard contactless credentials. The other four are HID SE PIV-I readers in 40 bit, 64 bit, 75 bit, and 200 bit formats, plus a 128 bit version. Match the bit format to what your credential system already issues, because a PIV-I reader configured for the wrong card number length won't pass a usable number to the panel. All five readers are HID NFC Mobile Access enabled.
3) Can I key the HES KS200 into my building's existing SFIC master key system?
Yes, if your system runs small format interchangeable core. The mechanical key override accepts a 6 or 7-pin SFIC, so a core from your existing system drops straight in. Order the KS200 with a blank plastic core if you're supplying your own cores from stock, with no cylinder if the housing is going to a locksmith, or factory fitted with a MEDECO X4 SFIC in the DGV commercial keyway including one control and one user key. The override is also compatible with MEDECO XT intelligent keys if you're running audited key control.
4) Can the HES KS200 tell me if a server cabinet was left standing open?
Two separate things get monitored, and only one is standard. Locked state monitoring is built in, so the lock reports whether it is secured. Knowing the door is physically closed requires the optional extended DPS monitoring sensor, which is a separate item to add to the order. If your compliance audit needs proof a cabinet was closed and not just relocked, specify the DPS sensor. An optional auxiliary lock output is also available.
5) Should I use a credential reader cabinet lock like the HES KS200 or a simple keyed cabinet lock?
It comes down to whether you need an audit trail and central control. The KS200 carries an integrated HID multiCLASS SE reader and hard wired Wiegand communication back to an access control system, so every rack open is a credentialed event on your panel. If you only need to keep a cabinet or drawer shut and nobody needs a record of who opened it, a mechanical unit is far less to install: the Sargent 1655 6-pin cabinet lock is field reversible, and the BEST 3L Series dead-locking cabinet lock uses a 7-pin housing that suits an existing SFIC system. For keyless without wiring or credentials, the Lockey C170 is a mechanical combination cam lock.
6) What is the closest alternative to the HES KS200 server cabinet lock for a cabinet with no low-voltage wiring run to it?
The KS200 is hard wired, so it needs power and a Wiegand run to the cabinet. Where no cable can be pulled, the SDC 295 Series battery powered programmable cabinet lock with a 30-user keypad is the standalone option in the same cabinet-lock family: credentials are held at the lock as keypad users rather than sent to an access control panel. The tradeoff is real - the KS200 reports locked state back to the head end and reads HID multiCLASS SE or HID SE PIV-I cards, and a battery keypad lock does neither.
7) Which electric cabinet lock should I use if my access control panel outputs dry contact relay power instead of Wiegand?
The KS200 is an integrated device - the card reader, the lock and the monitoring outputs are all in one body communicating over Wiegand. A panel that only switches power to a lock wants a plain electric lock instead: the DynaLock 1410 Series dual voltage cabinet lock or the SDC 290 Series micro cabinet electric bolt lock, also dual voltage, both take a switched supply and throw a bolt. Reader, credential and door position sensing then live in whatever separate reader you mount on the rack.
8) I only need to key server cabinets to our existing SFIC system, not put them on access control. What takes the place of a KS200?
Drop to a mechanical SFIC cabinet lock. The BEST 3L Series dead-locking cabinet lock uses a 7-pin housing with vertical rim mounting, and the BEST 5L Series coin box cabinet lock takes a 7-pin SFIC core. Both accept the same interchangeable cores your facility already stocks, which is what the KS200 mechanical key override is for - the KS200 offers 6 or 7-pin SFIC override, so a site standardized on 7-pin cores can carry one keying scheme across mechanical and electrified cabinets.
9) For a federal facility that issues PIV cards, which cabinet lock reads the credential we already carry?
The HES KS200 is the one in this group with PIV-I reading built into the lock: it is offered with HID SE PIV-I readers in 40, 64, 75, 128 and 200 bit formats, alongside the HID multiCLASS SE version, and it is Grade 1 commercial. Mechanical peers such as the BEST 3L or the Sargent 1655 are key-only and read nothing, and the SDC 295 authenticates by keypad code rather than by card. Match the PIV bit format to what your access control system is already configured to accept.
10) My controller speaks OSDP, not Wiegand. Is the KS200 still the right part?
The KS200 is the Wiegand hard wired version of the K200 Series. The same series is built as the KS210 for RS-485 OSDP communication, and Bluetooth mobile credentials are available on KS210 models only. If your head end is OSDP, or you want Bluetooth alongside the HID card read, specify the KS210 rather than reworking the panel around Wiegand. Nothing else in the cabinet lock comparables carries an OSDP option - the DynaLock 1410 and SDC 290 are powered locks with no reader communication at all.
11) What electric cabinet lock can I use if my rack doors don't take a swing handle lock?
The KS200 is specific to swing handle server cabinet doors and cam operation, so a cabinet without that handle prep is the wrong application for it. For an electrically controlled cabinet that isn't a swing handle rack, the SDC 290 Series micro cabinet electric bolt lock and the DynaLock 1410 Series are both dual voltage electric cabinet locks that mount to the cabinet rather than replacing a handle. Those give you remote release from a panel, but they don't carry a card reader in the lock the way the KS200 does.
12) Do I have to buy a cylinder with the HES KS200, or can I use my own cores?
Three cylinder choices, and all three exist against every card reader option. No Cylinder ships the lock without a core, which is what you want when your locksmith is pinning cores to your own system. Blank Plastic SFIC Core ships a filler so the housing isn't open during install and staging. With MEDECO X4 SFIC ships keyed and ready with two keys. On a large rack rollout, ordering no cylinder and pinning in-house keeps every cabinet on one key hierarchy.
13) Is the HES KS200 rated for commercial data center use?
Grade 1 and specified as commercial, which is the top ANSI grade tier and what a data center or colocation spec normally calls for on rack level access. Static strength is 350. For a facility standardizing cabinet access across many rooms, the combination of Grade 1 construction and one non-handed part number simplifies the spec considerably.
14) What happens to a wired HES KS200 rack lock if the power or network drops?
The mechanical override is your answer. Because the KS200 is hard wired with no battery backup in the lock, the 6 or 7-pin SFIC key override is the way into the cabinet when power is out. That's a real reason to order cores rather than the No Cylinder version on production racks, and to keep the control key where the on-call technician can reach it.
15) The KS200 mounts on a swing handle. What do I use on a drawer or a hinged cabinet door instead?
The KS200 installs on most swing handle server cabinet doors, which is the rack enclosure format. For drawers, the Sargent KESO F1 4152 Series cabinet lock is built for drawers with security system integration, and the KESO F1 4252 Series is the field reversible drawer version. For a hinged cabinet door, the Sargent 1655 6-pin cabinet lock is field reversible for handing and the Sargent 4142 is a horizontal cabinet lock with a 6-pin brass cylinder. The KS200 itself is non-handed, so handing is only a question once you leave the swing handle format.
16) Is the Lockey C170 combination cam lock a substitute for the HES KS200?
Not for the same job. Both are cam actuated, and the Lockey C170 is a mechanical surface mount keyless digital combination cam lock with a low profile design fitting doors 1-1/8 to 2 inches thick. But a combination is shared and unaudited: the KS200 is a Grade 1 commercial device that reads HID multiCLASS SE or HID SE PIV-I credentials and reports locked state, and optionally door status, back over Wiegand. If the requirement is per-person credentials or a record of who opened the cabinet, the C170 does not replace it; if the requirement is simply keeping a cabinet shut without wiring, it does.
