HES HES-KS210-S-IPS-B-BC – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the HES KS210 server cabinet lock work on my swing handle rack door, and does it care which way the door swings?
The KS210 mounts on most swing handle server cabinet doors and it's non-handed, so the same part goes on left- and right-hand cabinets without a reversing step or a separate SKU. It's cam activated, so it drives the existing cam-style swing handle latch rather than replacing the handle mechanism.
2) What is the difference between the HES KS200 and the KS210 cabinet lock?
Communication protocol is the split. The KS200 is hard wired Wiegand; the KS210 is hard wired RS-485 OSDP. If your access control panel is already speaking OSDP on an RS-485 bus, the KS210 is the one that drops onto it. There's a second consequence: the Bluetooth option on the integrated HID multiCLASS SE reader is available on KS210 models only, so mobile credentials mean KS210.
3) Does the HES KS210 rack lock run on batteries, or do I have to pull power to every cabinet?
No batteries. The KS210 is hard powered, over Power over Ethernet, so each cabinet needs a wired run back to the network. That's the trade against a battery unit: no cells to swap across a room full of racks, but you're pulling cable. If a wired run to the cabinet isn't practical, a battery powered cabinet lock like the SDC 295 Series with its 30-user keypad is the other approach.
4) What cylinder options come with the HES KS210, and what do I get if I order it with no cylinder?
Three cylinder choices. No Cylinder leaves the SFIC housing empty for you to drop in your own facility core. With Blank Plastic SFIC Core ships a filler so the opening is closed until you core it. With MEDECO X4 SFIC supplies a Medeco X4 core in the DGV commercial keyway with two keys, one control and one user. The mechanical override accepts 6 or 7-pin SFIC, including Medeco XT intelligent keys.
5) Can I key HES KS210 server cabinet locks into the SFIC master key system we already run in the building?
Yes, if your system is small format interchangeable core. The KS210 override takes a 6 or 7-pin SFIC, so order it with No Cylinder and install cores off your existing keying schedule. Buy the Medeco X4 version only if you want a new restricted keyway, since that one arrives in the Medeco DGV commercial keyway rather than yours. Medeco XT intelligent keys are also supported if you're running audited keys.
6) Which card reader do I specify on an HES KS210 for a federal PIV-I credential?
The KS210 reader is chosen at order time and it's not field changeable. For PIV-I you pick the bit format your head end expects: HID SE PIV-I in 40, 64, 75, 128, or 200 bit. For standard commercial badging, take the HID multiCLASS SE reader instead, which handles contactless cards. Every reader option is HID mobile access enabled with BLE and NFC. Match the PIV bit length to what your access control system is configured to read, because the wrong format won't decode.
7) Can I tell from my access control software whether a server cabinet is actually shut, not just unlocked?
Two separate signals here. The KS210 includes locked state monitoring as standard, which reports the lock position. Knowing the door itself is closed requires the optional extended DPS sensor, ordered and connected separately. If your compliance reporting has to show the cabinet closed, locked and secure, you need that DPS sensor in the order. An auxiliary lock output is also optional.
8) I just need to lock a few racks without tying them into access control. Is the HES KS210 overkill?
Probably. The KS210 is a networked credential reader that has to be wired for PoE and integrated with an OSDP head end, so it earns its place only where you want audit trails and badge or mobile credentials. For standalone rack or cabinet security, a keyed cam lock such as the BEST 3L Series dead-locking cabinet lock with its 7-pin housing, or the Lockey C170 surface mount keyless combination cam lock, does the job without any wiring or panel. Go the other way if you need electric release from a panel but not a reader: the DynaLock 1410 Series dual voltage cabinet lock or the SDC 290 Series micro electric bolt lock.
9) What should I use on a drawer instead of the HES KS210?
The KS210 is designed for swing handle server cabinet doors and is cam activated, so it is not a drawer lock. For drawers, the Sargent KESO F1 4152 Series is a cabinet lock for drawers with security system integration, and the Sargent KESO F1 4252 Series is a drawer lock with field reversible operation. The Sargent 4142 is a horizontal cabinet lock with a 6-pin brass cylinder, and the Sargent 1655 is a 6-pin cabinet lock with field reversible handing, both useful where the opening orientation is set by the millwork.
10) What is a mechanical alternative to the HES KS210 server cabinet lock for a cabinet with no access control wiring?
The Lockey C170 is a surface mount keyless digital combination cam cabinet lock with a low profile design, fitting doors 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch thick. It is operated by a mechanical combination rather than a credential, so it needs no wiring run to the cabinet. The HES KS210 is a hard wired lock powered over Ethernet, with an integrated HID card reader and SFIC key override, so it reports locked state back to the head end while the C170 works standalone at the door.
11) Which electric cabinet lock works on a low voltage access control panel instead of OSDP over Ethernet?
The DynaLock 1410 is a heavy duty dual voltage cabinet lock, and the SDC 290 Series is a micro cabinet electric bolt lock also built for dual voltage operation. Both take a switched low voltage feed from a panel or power supply and throw a bolt, which suits an existing 12/24V access control head end. The HES KS210 instead uses RS-485 OSDP communication with an integrated HID multiCLASS SE reader on the lock itself and is powered over Ethernet, so the credential is read at the cabinet rather than at a separate reader.
12) Is there a credential cabinet lock that does not require running any power to the cabinet?
The SDC 295 Series is a battery powered programmable cabinet lock with a 30-user keypad, so users are enrolled at the lock and no power or data run reaches the cabinet. The HES KS210 is not battery operated; it is a hard wired lock powered over Ethernet that carries an HID multiCLASS SE card reader and reports locked state and optional door status back over RS-485 OSDP. Choose the 295 where no cable can be pulled and the 210 where the cabinet has to appear in the access control system.
13) I already key my cabinets on SFIC cores. Which cabinet locks besides the HES KS210 take an interchangeable core?
The BEST 3L Series is a dead-locking cabinet lock with a 7-pin housing and vertical rim mounting, and the BEST 5L Series is a coin box cabinet lock with a 7-pin SFIC core housing, so both accept a core from an existing small format system. The HES KS210 uses a 6 or 7-pin SFIC mechanical key override alongside its card reader, and can be ordered with no cylinder, a blank plastic SFIC core, or a MEDECO X4 SFIC in the DGV commercial keyway with two keys. If the cabinets are already on your SFIC master key, the no-cylinder or blank core build lets you drop in your own core.
14) Which cabinet lock supports mobile credentials and PIV-I cards for a government data center?
The HES KS210 is the option built for credential-based entry: it is Grade 1, commercial rated, and carries an integrated HID multiCLASS SE reader with BLE and NFC mobile access, with card reader builds including HID SE PIV-I at 40, 64, 75, 128 and 200 bit formats. The comparable cabinet locks take a different approach - the SDC 295 Series is a battery powered programmable lock with a 30-user keypad, and the BEST 3L and 5L Series are mechanical locks keyed through a 7-pin core. For PIV-I card formats or a phone credential, the KS210 is the one that reads them.
15) Is the HES KS210 cabinet lock strong enough for a colocation cage or a regulated data hall?
It's a Grade 1 commercial lock with a static strength rating of 350, which is the durability tier you'd spec for shared or audited rack space rather than an office credenza. Grade 1 is the heaviest commercial rating in the standard three-tier scheme. Pair that with the standard lock monitoring and the SFIC mechanical override and you get an electronic access record plus a way in when the network is down.
16) Will an HES KS210 open with a phone instead of a badge?
Yes. Every KS210 configuration ships HID mobile access enabled with both BLE and NFC on the integrated reader. That Bluetooth capability is specific to the KS210; the Wiegand KS200 doesn't offer it. You still need HID mobile credentials issued on your side, and the SFIC key override remains as the mechanical backup.
17) Does a cabinet lock have to be handed, or can one part cover left and right hand cabinets?
The HES KS210 is non-handed, so one part number serves cabinets swinging either way. Among mechanical cabinet locks, the Sargent 1655 is a 6-pin cabinet lock with field reversible handing and the Sargent KESO F1 4252 Series is field reversible in operation, meaning handing is set during installation rather than at order. For a fleet of racks where you do not want to survey each door before ordering, the non-handed and field reversible builds both avoid a handing count.
18) What is the difference between the HES KS210 and the SDC 290 for securing a server rack?
The SDC 290 Series is a micro cabinet electric bolt lock with dual voltage operation, a bolt that a panel releases with a low voltage output. The HES KS210 is cam activated, non-handed, powered over Ethernet, and communicates on RS-485 OSDP, with the HID reader, locked state monitoring and an SFIC mechanical key override built into the lock. The 290 is the smaller electric release behind someone else's reader; the 210 is the reader, lock and monitoring point in one assembly on the swing handle.
19) How many HES KS210 configurations are there and what am I choosing between?
Eighteen orderable combinations, built from two decisions. Reader: HID multiCLASS SE, or HID SE PIV-I in 40, 64, 75, 128 or 200 bit. Cylinder: no cylinder, blank plastic SFIC core, or Medeco X4 SFIC. Every combination of those is available, and all of them carry the HID BLE and NFC mobile option. Nail down the reader format with whoever administers your access control system first, since that choice is fixed at manufacture.
